Richard grew up in KCKS, with his siblings, father, and stepmother. He graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1949, where he was a member of the track team. There also he met the love of his life, Joyce Lorraine Carlson whom he would in marry in 1951. He was a proud military veteran of the U.S. Navy, and was based in Virginia. Following the service to his country, Richard and Joyce returned to Kansas City, KS. where they raised their family. His working career was with the Gas Service Company in management both in Kansas City, KS and Liberty, MO.

Richard was a faithful member of Saint Luke Lutheran Church in KCK for over 70 years, where he and Joyce were married, as were all three of their children. He served with Sunday School, outreach, and on various volunteer boards over the years.

After an active and healthy retirement, his final few years saw a steady health decline that accelerated with a stroke in 2018, which resulted in his move to Morningside of Branson Meadows assisted living in Branson, MO nearer to Kevin’s home.  He received very good care at the facility and became a favorite of staff members & residents.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests any donations in Richard’s honor & memory be directed to Saint Luke Lutheran Church, 722 Reynolds Ave., Kansas City, Kansas, 66101.

So many happy memories of Uncle Dick. He was always so loving to me and I knew how much he genuinely cared about me. I feel so blessed God put him in my life and that of my husband and children. He was a constant steady in my life through so many hard times. I am beyond grateful for all the visits and help along the way. Uncle Dick exemplified what it meant to live a life that served others before himself. I will cherish every happy moment I have of him and Aunt Joyce. I know he is so very happy to be with his sweet bride as he would call her.

Uncle Dick was a great father figure and friend to me. He was always kind to me and my family. Uncle Dick’s faith and love of God and people shone through every thing he did. And, he was always willing to help anyone in need. It is an honor and privilege to have known and loved Uncle Dick and to have his love in return.

Sister in Christ ,Shawnee ,Kansas

We became friends with Dick and Joyce when I was called into ministry at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, KCK. They both were so devoted to serving their Lord in many areas. I was blessed to have them volunteer (two of the best 😊) with Vacation Bible School, Children’s Christmas programs and Midweek Christian Education. Dick was so loving, kind and patient with the children. It was so helpful to have him take a child who needed individual attention and know just what that child needed. Dick was devoted to Joyce and all the family. I learned a lot from watching Dick & Joyce as a couple, as parents & grandparents. I thank God for the blessing of this wonderful Christian man. He has won the victory over sin and death. He is now rejoicing with the Lord and other loved ones. We who believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior will be reunited again one day in Heaven. Prayers for comfort and peace for the family are lifted up to the Lord.

Uncle Richard was one of the kindest, sweetest men I’ve known. His father Louis was married to my grandmother Belle. He was the only grandfather we knew. Richard and my mother Alice we’re step siblings. He was such a nice man, we will all miss him.

Worked with Dick ,Platte City ,Missouri

Sure am sorry to hear of the passing of Dick. He was my first boss when I worked at The Gas Service Company at the Independence, MO office. Wonderful boss, and really "showed me the ropes." Which I guess that it took, because I retired from the gas company after 43 years. He lovingly talked about his family, and was so proud of his children. Dick was a very special man, and I am very grateful that I got to work with him, and call him a good friend. My prayers to his family!!
