Jun 09, 1941---Mar 21, 2026

Charlene left this worldly life on March 21, 2026. She was a proud lifelong Wyandotte County resident. She was born June 9, 1941 in Kansas City, Kansas at Bethany Hospital to August Vogel and Gladys Redick Vogel. The youngest of three children. Losing her father at the age of 5, her mother remarried and she gained a loving stepfather, Buford Otey and a blended family with two more siblings.

She began working at the age of 15 at the W.T. Grant Co. on Minnesota Avenue until graduating from Wyandotte High School in 1959. She met and married Harold M. Sargent on November 12, 1960 and they raised two children. They were married 29 years and remained gracious afterward enjoying family holidays together. She continued her career in bookkeeping/ accounting at various employers throughout her life- Encyclopedia Britannica, The National Cash Register Co., Massey-Ferguson Farm Implements, KCK Community College, Balls Super Foods, Bethel Lutheran Church and The Wyandotte Bank which later became Bank Midwest. Toward the end of her career with the bank, she hung up her bookkeeping hat for customer service and coordinating activities for the 55+ group. She retired from Bank Midwest after 26 years of service in 2006. After retirement she enjoyed part-time jobs at Schlitterbahn Water Park, Sporting KC Soccer Stadium in the designated driver booth and Delaware Highlands Assisted Living where she eventually became a resident.

Charlene will truly be missed by all of her loved ones and everyone whose life she touched. She did not know a stranger, sometimes to the dismay of her family. No matter where she was- church, Walmart, hospital, public restroom, she always had a kind greeting or comment for someone she met. She is survived by her children Martin Sargent (Roxane) and Misty Wilkinson (Bill). Grandchildren Matthew Sargent (April), Nathan Sargent, Elizabeth Mansur (Matt), Emily Marrs (Hayden), Elle Wilkinson (Carter) and Ethan Sargent. Great Grandchildren Cole, Carter, Hadley, Cooper and Bennett. Brother Gearhard Vogel and sister-in-laws Dorothy Vogel and Judy Otey as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Charlene was preceded in death by her parents as well as her brothers Herbert Vogel and Robert Otey, sister and brother-in-law Frances and Kenneth Morris, sister-in-law Carolyn Vogel, niece Sherri Morris and nephew Scott Otey.

Charlene loved her church. She was baptized as an infant at St Luke’s Lutheran and after raising her family at Bethel Lutheran, she returned to her church home, Tree of Life Christian Fellowship. A visitation will be held on April 7, 2026 at 10 am with memorial service to follow at 11 am at Tree of Life Christian Fellowship, 722 Reynolds Ave Kansas City, KS 66101. Porter Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements. A private graveside service will occur later. The family requests donations to the church, Tree of Life Christian Fellowship in lieu of flowers.

I first met Char in the fall of 1985 when I went to work at Wyandotte Bank. We were in the same department together for the first couple of years. We had lots of great talks & fun along the way. My mom is living at Delaware Highlands so I saw Char quite often when I went to visit my mom. She would be sitting in the lobby visiting or if it was nice, she would be sitting outside soaking up the sunshine! She was always so sweet to my mom. Char was more like family to me than just a friend. I'm so glad we stayed in touch all these 40 years! I miss seeing her already! Prayers for her family & many friends!
