Jun 23, 1956---Dec 19, 2025

Michael Shawn Miller, 69, of Lenexa, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly on December 19, 2025.  Visitation will be held at 2:00 p.m. with Memorial Services following at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30, at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia Lenexa, KS.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to ASCENT Recovery Residences in Joplin, Missouri, at https://roccjoplin.com/ascent-home/, in honor of Mike’s life and the work that meant so much to him.

Mike built a long and successful career in the mortgage industry, most recently retiring as Sales Operations Manager at Zillow Home Loans after nearly seven years with the company. Earlier in his life, he devoted himself to helping others through his work with ASCENT Recovery Residences in Joplin, Missouri, from 2008 to 2016. Many who crossed paths with Mike through ASCENT credit him with making a profound difference in their lives, and some even say he helped save theirs.

Mike’s love of life was most evident in the things he enjoyed—and the people he shared them with. A lifelong golf enthusiast, he was eager to get back on the course after mobility challenges in recent years. He was a passionate fan of live music, often attending concerts several nights a week and traveling across the country to see his favorite performers—including two Paul McCartney shows just months apart. If you knew Mike, chances are good you found yourself at a show with him at some point.

Mike’s love of sports ran deep, but nothing compared to his passion for Kansas Jayhawks basketball. Allen Fieldhouse felt like a second home, and he was proud to pass that love for KU hoops on to his daughter, Sara.

Mike made friends wherever he went—and he went a lot of places, living in every corner of the country from New England to California. Known for his quick wit, unmistakable laugh, and ability to connect with anyone, Mike’s warmth and humor left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

He is survived by his children, Sara and Aaron; and his siblings, Lisa, Peter, Katie, and Amy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Shirley and Jack.

Mike dedicated nine wonderful years to Mortgage Lenders of America and Zillow Home Loans, where he truly made a lasting impact. He wore many hats and was a wizard when it came to understanding all of our system quirks — there was very little Mike couldn’t figure out or help untangle. What we’ll remember most, though, is Mike himself. He was always smiling, always eager to help those around him, and always ready to jump in wherever he was needed. Mike was often the first to RSVP to any out-of-the-office work event — he loved mingling, connecting, and simply being with people. He was down for anything and had a way of bringing energy into every room. With his larger-than-life stories, adventurous spirit, and genuine love for people, Mike was truly the life of the party. He brought joy, laughter, and warmth to all of us, and he will be deeply missed.

This is sad news. Mike and I would catch up at the reunions and communicate on Facebook. We had discussed his mobility issues, but he was always so upbeat. Going to miss you Mike.

I had the pleasure of working with Mike for over a year at Zillow Home Loans. Mike was always so very passionate about his work and dedicated to his team. He also had a great sense of humor and had a wonderful ability to make those around him smile. He will be missed by so many. He always wanted to get together in Atlanta, but the opportunity never presented itself. However, the memories will always remain. Fly high, Mike!

Mike had an infectious personality to go with a booming voice. He was always one to share the successes and be thankful to everyone he worked with. It was such a pleasure to work with him for six years, share company dinners, talk about future plans, and talk about family. He will be very sorely missed by all. Well wishes to those that were closest to him and we will miss you, good sir.

Mike was such a wonderful person who always made me laugh. We worked together at Zillow, and continued to stay in touch after his retirement. He was a kind and jovial person, and I will miss him immensely. I was shocked and saddened to hear of his sudden passing, and my thoughts are with his family. He was so proud of his children and spoke of them in nearly every conversation we had. Sara and Aaron, you were always on Mike's mind and in his heart
