With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Maureen Ann Huckaby, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend whose life was a beautiful quilt of faith, love, and intention.
She was born in Panama City, Panama, to Thomas Anthony Royal and Irma Ann Royal. They made Kansas City their home since 1974.
Maureen graduated from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School with the class of 1984. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1991. She then graduated from UMKC with a Master of Social Work. Most recently, she graduated from Western Governors University with a Master of Business Administration.
During Maureen’s life, she worked at Michael E. Coughlin, CPA, Neff Printing, and an internship with United Cerebral Palsy. She spent seventeen years at UMKC, and the last six years she has been at Children’s Mercy Hospital. While at CMH, she was promoted to Director of Research Accounting. She was a cherished coworker and mentor and became lifelong friends with many of them.
Maureen lived each day with purpose and grace, guided by her deep faith and an unwavering commitment to helping others. Her vision boards told the story of a woman who believed in the power of hope, compassion, and human connection. She understood that life's greatest treasures weren't found in possessions but in the relationships she nurtured and the lives she touched.
A woman of profound faith, Maureen found strength in prayer and shared that spiritual foundation with everyone around her. She believed in taking time to breathe, to be present, and to show love and empathy to all who crossed her path. Her gentle reminders to "begin," to embrace each new day with intention, and to have faith even in difficult times, inspired countless people throughout her life.
Maureen's heart overflowed with love for her family and friends. She cherished gathering loved ones together, creating memories filled with laughter, warmth, and joy. Her home was a sanctuary where everyone felt welcomed, valued, and cared for. She had an extraordinary gift for making people feel seen and heard, offering comfort to those in need and celebrating life's simple blessings.
Her legacy is one of kindness, generosity, and unwavering love. She taught us that with faith, intention, and an open heart, we can make each moment meaningful and touch countless lives along the way.
Maureen will be deeply missed by her devoted husband, Kevin Stuart Huckaby; son, Joe Hannoun; daughters, Sara (Justin) Walden and Liz Hannoun; grandchildren, Charlie and Addie Walden; her sister, Diane (Scott) Getz; her nephew, Zach (Laura Polucha) Getz; nieces, Paige and Mackenzie Getz. She was preceded in death by her father (Thomas Royal), mother (Irma Brown Royal), and brother (Thomas Anthony Royal Jr.). All who met her were blessed to know her. Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort knowing she lived a life full of purpose, love, and faith—exactly as she intended.
