Oct 12, 1940---Jun 13, 2025
Gerald “Jerry” Robert Magliano, 84, of Lenexa, Kansas, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2025, following a courageous battle with cancer. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 54 years, Maria “Rory” Magliano; his children Anthony Magliano (Christen Edwards), Michael Magliano, and Lisa Markley (Jim Markley); beloved grandchildren Evan and Lilah Markley; sister Cynthia DeJong (Dr. John DeJong); brother George Magliano (Pat Schaffert); and many extended family and friends.
Born in Hackensack, New Jersey in 1940, Jerry grew up in Hasbrouck Heights as the oldest of four children of Anthony and Rose Magliano. He was a supportive big brother to Cynthia and George and carried the memory of their youngest sister, Rosemarie, who died in infancy, throughout his life. His siblings lovingly described him as studious, independent, and true—qualities that defined his character from a young age. Later in life, Jerry became the proud patriarch of the Magliano family, offering strength, guidance, and a deep sense of tradition to all those he loved.
He attended Corpus Christi Catholic School and later St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, a Jesuit high school that shaped his intellect and values. There, he played on the 1958 undefeated state championship baseball team and often said his years at “the Prep” were among the most formative of his life.
Jerry earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Detroit, where he completed a cooperative education program with Ford Motor Company. While in college, he also trained through the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Course and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant upon graduation.
Over a 20-year career in the United States Marine Corps, Jerry served with honor and distinction, including two tours in Vietnam and leadership roles throughout the U.S. and abroad. In 1965, before the official start of the Vietnam War, he was commissioned on a top-secret mission to deploy with Bravo Battery to Da Nang, where he helped establish ground-to-air missile defense on Hill 327 and train friendly Vietnamese forces. His final assignment brought him to the Marine Corps Finance Center in Kansas City, where he retired in 1983 with the rank of Major, serving as Head of the Consolidated Disbursing Office.
It was during his assignment at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas in the late 1960s that Jerry met the love of his life, Maria “Rory” Delgado. They were married on May 22, 1971, at St. Michael’s Chapel on Fort Bliss and soon after settled in Mission Viejo, California, where they began raising their family. In 1978, Rory and the children returned to El Paso to be near her family while Jerry completed a yearlong unaccompanied tour in Okinawa, Japan. Throughout his life, Jerry remained very close with all his in-laws, embracing the Delgados as his own extended family with warmth and deep affection.
After retiring from active duty, Jerry earned his MBA from Rockhurst University and served as Director of its MBA program. In 1988, he began teaching at Johnson County Community College, where he served as Assistant Dean of Business, Technology, and Computer Instruction before returning to full-time teaching. He retired in 2014, having left a lasting impact on countless students and colleagues.
In 2000, Jerry partnered with his neighbor Don Norwood to co-develop the first Academy of Math and Science in the state of Kansas at Fort Hays State University. They worked tirelessly for several years to gain state legislative support and funding. When it finally opened, the Academy became one of only 16 in the nation offering high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to earn their diplomas while simultaneously completing college coursework. Today, more than 300 students have graduated from the program, a legacy of Don and Jerry’s vision and dedication to education.
In his final decade of life, Jerry continued to serve his country through civic leadership as President of the Kansas City chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), advocating nationally for the rights and benefits of veterans and their families. He embodied MOAA’s motto,“Never Stop Serving.”
Of all his accomplishments, Jerry considered his greatest achievement to be raising his three children, Anthony, Lisa, and Michael, with Rory. He was a man of intellect, humility, faith, and deep integrity. He loved food and sharing meals with friends and loved ones, found joy in music and history, and took pride in his Italian-American heritage. Jerry was also known for his quiet generosity and selfless acts of service to his family, friends, and neighbors. He was a deeply engaged grandfather who played an active role in the daily life and care of his grandchildren, Evan and Lilah, and his steady presence helped shape who they are today. Jerry lived a full and deeply meaningful life and truly believed that we should all be so fortunate.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 29, from 2:00 to 4:45 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS. Eulogies will be shared from approximately 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., followed by the Rosary at 4:45 p.m.
The Funeral Mass will take place on Monday, June 30, at 10:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 12800 W. 75th St., Shawnee, KS. Following the mass, he will be laid to rest in the Holy Family Mausoleum at Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, KS.

Major Gerald Magliano will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to service in uniform, in the classroom, and in his community. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the institutions he helped build, and the family he so dearly loved.

Special Blessings to "Rory", Lisa and Jerry's extended family! We're comforted in scripture, per Paul's words... that to "Graduate" from one's earthly journey is gain for believers, as Jerry most certainly was. He invited yours truly to serve on his MOAA Chapter's Board. That role led to a service bond for which I am extremely grateful. Salute and Semper Fidelis!

Mr. Magliano created a wonderful program. Where students like me could find like minded individuals and grow, not only academically but individually. Finding friends and making connections we never would have been able to before. A great man has passed and the academy mourns his loss.

Jerry and I started as hallway coworkers with very different ways of seeing the world. Our pollitical debates go back to post 9/11. But through it all, he was a steadfast friend, adviser, lunch companion, sharer of travel tips, sparring partner, and reliable presence at every event from marriage to birthdays. Words can't convey how much he is missed.

Magliano Family, please accept our condolences. We did not know Mr. Magliano personally, but are very grateful for the tremendous opportunities the KAMS program is providing for our son, from a very small rural Kansas school. We are very grateful for Mr. Magliano's foresight and effort to bring this program to Fort Hays. You have much to be proud of - best regards and sympathies.
