Retired United States Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Charles J. Dowds, born on April 18, 1943, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away on March 17, 2025, at the age of 81. A life defined by honor, service, love, adventure, and passion, Chuck leaves behind a remarkable legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Chuck was the son of Bernard Dowds and Linda Raff. He served his country with distinction during his career in the United States Marine Corps, embodying the values of integrity, courage, and dedication. After a long and successful career, Chuck retired from the Marine Corps in 1997. During his service, Chuck also pursued higher education and earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, exemplifying his commitment to excellence and self-improvement.
Following his retirement, Chuck continued to serve his community by working for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), where his dedication and work ethic shone.
Chuck shared 29 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife Wendy, who passed away in April 2006. Later, he found love again with Nancy, with whom he spent 16 cherished years until her passing in December 2024. His resilience and capacity for love were a testament to the strength of his spirit.
Chuck was passionate about travel, embracing the joy of discovering new places and cultures. He also had a love for golf, enjoying the camaraderie and tranquility that came with time spent on the course. His adventurous spirit and hobbies enriched his life and left warm memories for his family and friends.
At the time of his passing, Chuck was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lenexa, Kansas, where his faith remained an important part of his life. His relationship with Jesus Christ as his Savior was a source of strength and comfort.
Chuck is survived by his step-sons Richard and David Holtzem, along with their wives Kelly and Sandy; his step-sons Doug and Chad Elstun (and Chad’s spouse Stacey); and his step-daughter Pam Buckner and her spouse Rod. Chuck was a proud grandfather to Christopher (and his spouse Beverly), Matthew (and his spouse Melanie), Whitney (and her spouse Chris), Lauren (and her spouse Adam), Devin, Katelyn, Ethan, Brooks, and Mackenzie. Additionally, he cherished his nine great-grandchildren and the enduring legacy of love and family they represent.
A celebration of Chuck's life will be held at 1pm on April 9, 2025, at Porter Funeral Home followed immediately by burial at Shawnee Mission Memorial Gardens.
Chuck will be remembered for his steadfast dedication to his family, his faith, his country, and his love for exploring the world and hitting the greens. His kindness, strength, and integrity left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
