Dec 24, 1937---Feb 12, 2025

Father James J. White, SJ, died Feb. 12, 2025, in Kansas City, Kansas. He was 87 years old, a Jesuit for 62 years and a priest for 53 years.

He will be remembered in a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Trinity Church (13615 West 92nd Street, Lenexa, Kansas 66215) on Saturday, February 22, at 10:30 a.m., with a visitation from 9:30-10:15 and rosary at 10:15. He will be buried at Mt. Calvary Cemetery (St. Mary’s Jesuit Mission Cemetery) in St. Marys, Kansas, at 3:00 p.m. the same day.

James Joseph White was born Dec. 24, 1937, the youngest of John F. and Agnes Triska White’s seven children. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother John F. White, Jr., and four sisters, Patricia Massieon, Jacquie Kelly, Mary Ellen Benedict and Honor White Lew. He is survived by his brother Fr. Robert A. White, SJ, a Jesuit of USA Central and Southern Province, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He graduated from Rockhurst College, now Rockhurst University, in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in education. After being drafted and serving in the U.S. Army in Vietnam for a year (1960-61), he taught grade school while attending night school at Kansas State University for a year before entering the Society of Jesus at St. Stanislaus Seminary on Sept. 1, 1962. He pronounced first vows on Sept. 2, 1964. He was ordained a priest at the Cathedral of St. Louis on June 3, 1971, and professed final vows on June 6, 1981, at Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Missouri.

Father White began his Jesuit ministry at Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Missouri, where he taught art and English from 1972 through 1989. While there, he also started a retreat program. He became renowned for his pottery, mostly ceramics, such as vases, tea sets, cookie jars, and even patens and chalices for newly ordained Jesuits.

After a sabbatical, he studied applied theology and spirituality at Gonzaga College in Spokane (1990-92), followed by a program in spiritual direction at the Guelph Centre of Spirituality in Ontario (1992-93), where he made the Spiritual Exercises for the third time and learned to give them to others. These credentials served him well as he entered a new phase of his life, when he served as director of spiritual development for priests in the Diocese of Dodge City, Kansas (1993-95), and then ministered to priests in the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas (1995-2010).

Finally, from 2010 to 2025, Fr. White served in pastoral ministry for the Archdiocese of Kansas City by continuing to offer spiritual direction to priests and celebrating the sacraments in various parishes. During his last 30 years he lived a simple life in a rustic one-story farmhouse, without internet access, computer, television, dishwasher, dryer or even a typewriter. He spent his days gardening, crafting pottery and raising chickens on 20 acres in a rural corner of the metro area.

On the occasion of his 50th jubilee as a priest, in 2021, Fr. White attributed his vocation to “consolation without cause,” when one day in church he quite unexpectedly received an invitation from God to become a priest. His immediate response was “yes.” After 50 years as a priest, he said that his most important accomplishment was “to grow in intimacy with Jesus.”

Father White earned both a Master of Arts in education and a theology degree at Saint Louis University and attended the Memphis Academy of Art.

We remember with gratitude all that God has done through his life of service to God and God’s people.

Memorial gifts may be made to the USA Central and Southern Province of the Society of Jesus at 4511 West Pine Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63108.

I truly enjoyed and also admired Father. He was always positive. When my direct neighbors started to raise chickens. I turned to Father for help, advice, comforting. He easily and quickly put me into a comfort zone. I was ever so grateful as he picked me up, comforted and advise me. He uplifted me. And it all worked out. He always brightened the day as ND also brought God's grace into my life. God rest his beautiful soul. Amen. Patricia Brown.

I admired and respected Father White, always enjoyed his homilies when he helped out at holy trinity. Bought dozens of his eggs, and loved listening to how he could tie in the scripture with his life living on his farm. I also was raised on a farm and it brought back many fond memories. God Bless, rest in peace Father White, you are already missed. Steve Humphreys

I enjoyed Fr. White's sermons. In the times he would 'fill in" at Queen of the Holy Rosary, I always knew I was in a for a long, and sometimes 'rabbit trail' sermon. He enjoyed telling "stories" and sometimes I thought he had got off track. But he would always, eventually circle 'all the way back around to his original message. I also enjoyed his ministry of bringing fresh farm eggs to the church when he was celebrating Mass. I remember buying a dozen and bringing them to my mom, who thoroughly enjoyed them, as she grew up on a farm, eating fresh farm eggs. Fr. White was a wonderful Priest and man of God. He seemed always willing and able to fill in at Queen, and I am sure, many other Parishes, when the Pastor was out of town or on vacation. Thank you Fr. White for your wonderful ministry of Priesthood and may you now Rest in Peace in Eternal Life with the Lord.

What a wonderful, humble priest! Fr. Jim taught my brothers (3) and 90% of my nephews (38 in all) at Rockhurst High. He also furnished me with eggs through Pat and Jim Carson for at least 10 years. We had chickens on Huntington Road when I was young so he and I had many, good conversations about chickens and the miracles of their egg production...very tasty...hahahah! Rest in peace, Fr. Jim, you did good!

Grateful recipient of Fr. Jim’s wisdom, love, caring & poultry advice ,Atchison ,Kansas

Farewell to a man small in stature, but big in spirituality, wisdom, simplicity, love, caring, humor, goodness & humility. We first met Fr. Jim through our parish of Prince of Peace in Olathe, KS probably in 2004 - the year we got married & the year I moved to Olathe. I loved his simple down-to-earth homilies. I loved buying farm fresh eggs from him and we enjoyed calling him Fr. Jim (Egg) White. We enjoyed stopping by to visit Fr. Jim on his peaceful acreage with his 200 chickens and huge garden on our way to our land northeast of Atchison. Once we got our house built and moved to Atchison County, Fr. Jim became our poultry consultant. : ) Fr. Jim took several roosters off our hands. I always hoped we we were related because my great great Grandma who emigrated from Cullohill, County Laois, was Honora Whyte Brophy. We were privileged to have Fr. Jim as our celebrant one Christmas vigil. We got to hear all about his birth on the anniversary of his birth. He also told stories from his childhood & how his mother had friends/parishioners that came over to say the rosary. (“…Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.” He was four or so when he looked out the window and saw the people coming to pray the rosary. He said, “Mother, here come all those sinners!” He told us he was ordained at the “new” cathedral in St. Louis, so when we visited & went to Mass there, we bought a postcard & mailed it to him thanking him for becoming a priest. Fr. Jim liked frozen Stauffer’s meatloaf so we gifted him some every now & then as well as homemade soup, biscuits, cookies, etc. We had him autograph the wonderful two-page article about him in the archdiocesan newspaper (The Leaven) complete with delightful pictures of him in his signature plaid shirt and blue denim overalls. We sent him a postcard from Mammoth Cave from our 2024 summer vacation. We were tickled to receive a surprise visit from him and one of his nieces this past fall. It was an honor to welcome him into our home and to have him see our chicken flock he was so gracious to consult with us on. He of course commented on our flock! He was not only a dear priest, he was a father figure & a grandpa figure. Fr. Jim had a way of making life lighter & more joyful. One always felt happier and more content after an encounter with him. Vaya con Dios, Fr. Jim (Egg) White! Thank you for your love & friendship. We love you. We will miss you. We will always fondly remember you.
