Carole Ann Haggerty, 87, of Prairie Village, KS, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2025. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM Monday, February 17, at St. Ann Catholic Church, 7231 Mission Rd. Prairie Village, KS 66208.
Carole Ann Haggerty (Sterr) was born on November 12, 1937,to Lester Wolfgang Raymond Sterr and Anna Sterr (Taticek) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She grew up in a very German household with her two sisters Patricia and Judith. At the age of 12 Carole became the director of the household as her mother passed due to a heart attack while visiting a friend. Even though Carole was the middle child, she took charge, a trait which remained until her dying day. On her deathbed her children told her to go see her husband and her parents. Her response was, “What about my sister?” Always looking out for Patsy who died in 1990.
Carole continued to look out for others with her chosen profession, a nurse. She graduated nursing school and decided with her friends to try out Denver. So, they all moved and got nursing jobs. Carole worked at Rose Medical Center in Denver for over 40 years as a postpartum nurse. She LOVED babies and continued to volunteer weighing babies even after her retirement.
In Denver Carole met a tall red-headed gentleman by the name of Niels Francis Haggerty. On the 3rd of June 1961 they were married and lived most of their married life on Krameria street in Denver, first in a duplex and later down the street at 1030 Krameria. It is in this house that they brought their one-year-old child, Christopher Dennis Haggerty, to live.
Chris was adopted in 1969 and the family of three had many adventures. From riding bikes around Denver to taking trips to Italy, Canada, and Disney. They also went to the West Coast to see the Haggerty’s in Oregon or Carole’s beloved sister Judy and niece Kathleen and nephew Steve in California. They also went cross-country skiing and enjoyed visiting Vail.
Once Chris was off the payroll in the early 1990s, Carole and Niels continued on their own adventures. They traveled several times with a group to New York to see Operas and plays, which they both loved. Another highlight was seeing the Three Tenors perform in California and riding in a limousine to the performance.
In 1996 Carole obtained a daughter when her son Chris married Leigh-Ann Jordan and more travels to France and Germany were in order. In 2005 Grandson’s Alexander Jordan Haggertywas born; and in 2009 Nicholas Francis Haggerty. There was nothing Carole loved more than holding those babies.
On Alex’s birthday in 2008 Carole lost the love of her life, Niels. Carole continued to live in her home tending her flowers, watching baseball, knitting, and cleaning until 2024. In May of 2024 Carole moved to an assisted living facility near her family in Kansas City until her death on February 11, 2025.
Eternal rest unto her soul and may she be in heaven with all the people she loved, including her sister Patsy.
