Peggy was born December 4, 1933, in Kilgore, Texas. She lived in parts of Texas and Oklahoma with her family before eventually settling in Mount Carmel, Illinois where she spent most of her childhood.
Peggy spent her early days raising four children with her husband of 53 years, John R. Elbert (d. 2017). In addition to volunteering yearly at school, she was a Block Mother in her community as well as the neighborhood taxi transporting her kids and their friends to the pool, bowling, movie theater or skating rink.
Peggy was a founding member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and assisted with St. Catherine’s Circle for many years. Volunteering and helping in the community were a lifelong passion for Peggy. She also enjoyed attending theater events with John and looked forward to the latest offerings at the New Theatre in Kansas City for many years. When she wasn’t out and about making new friends, Peggy practiced needlepoint. She was also a notorious “late bird” who enjoyed staying up late, especially to watch the original cast on Saturday Night Live. Most of all, Peggy loved to tell a good story, and they were all good stories!
She was preceded in death by her parents Hubert (Jelly) Hart and Catherine Hart (Porter), and siblings Tom Hart and Betty Giblin. She is survived by four children: Mike (Cindy) Elbert, Danville, CA, Kathy Quinlivan, St. Louis, MO, David Elbert, Overland Park, KS, Matt (Renee) Elbert, Kansas City, MO, five grandchildren Julia, Sean, Nichole, Matthew, Ryan, sibling Michael Hart of Shepherdstown, WV and many extended family and friends.
