George A. Lucas Jr., 91 passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. Visitation will be from 10-11:00 AM followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 14, at St. Ann Catholic Church, 7231 Mission Rd., Prairie Village, KS 66208.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George & Catherine Lucas and his sister Jo Ann Seitter. He is survived by his sisters Colleen Spitser and Kathleen Roth, and brother David Lucas.
George was born in Kansas City, Kansas on February 7, 1933, to George A. Lucas Sr. and Catherine (Maloney) Lucas. He attended and graduated from Guardian Angel Grade School, St. Agnes High School (1951) and Rockhurst College (1956) where he received a BS in Business Administration. Prior to graduating Rockhurst College, he attended Kansas City Kansas Community College where he played on the undefeated golf team that won the State and Inter-State Championships.
He is survived by his teenage sweetheart of 66 years whom he met at a high school mixer, Carol (Ashlock). They married on May 10th, 1958. They raised three children: Andy (Jean), Joe, and Amy and have enjoyed spoiling five grandchildren: Joey (Alyssa), Alex, Libby, Jack and Kate. They have been active members of St. Ann Catholic Church in Prairie Village, KS since 1963.
George worked for several insurance companies before forming Land Speed Insurance which focused on automobile racing. It was a great fit professionally, as he personally had a love of fast cars. He went on to found G.A. Lucas Inc Insurance Agency where he eventually retired from in 2011 and was proud to turn the business over to his sons. George enjoyed fostering business relationships and servicing his clients with honesty and a handshake.
George loved playing golf and gin rummy. You could find him at Blue Hills Country Club where he made many lifelong friends and enjoyed getting the best of them both on the course and in the card room. Some of his greatest golf accomplishments included multiple holes-in-one, tying the course record at Terradyne Golf Club in 1991 at the age of 58 by shooting a 30 on the back nine, winning the BHCC Men’s Senior Championship in 1997,and winning the Senior Amateur World Championship at Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado Springs in 1999.
But George loved most of all teasing Carol, watching his grandchildren play sports, teaching them to drive and to shoot a gun, talking shop with his sons, and adoring his precious daughter Amy.
When not on the golf course, George devoted much of his time to many charitable organizations including The Lions Club, Serra Club, Catholic Charities, St. Ann Catholic Church, Bishop Miege High School, St. Joseph Hospital, and Blue Hills Country Club. George was a faithful, trusting and generous soul.
George embodied the best kind of ornery. He stirred the pot and worked the room telling and retelling old stories. Mostly he added just the right amount of exaggeration to make everyone feel like they were in on the joke.
He was not in good health for the last year. But he savored every moment with his family who kept him comfortable and content at home.
He wished to enjoy the Christmas season and ring in the new year, which he did, surrounded by all his family. We trust, as you move through 2025, you will honor his spirit by pulling good natured pranks and practical jokes on those you love most. We know we will feel George’s presence when we least expect it.
