Dec 28, 1939---Nov 27, 2024

It is with great sorrow that the family of Hugh Patrick (Mac) McCowen announce his passing on November 27, 2024. He was born on December 28, 1939 to Agnes Mary O’Donohue and William Harold McCowen the 2nd of 3 children. He attended St. Aloysius Grade School and graduated from De La Salle High School in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended trade school for a year and worked for American Plumbing for several years before starting his own plumbing company, Apple Valley Plumbing, working for more than 50 years. He enjoyed working his trade and meeting new people from all over Kansas City.

He met and married his high school sweetheart Genie Hodes and they had 5 beautiful children. He raised his children with a firm but loving hand, and was a devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather also known as Poppa.

He was preceded in death by his wife Genie in April 2018, his parents, and his sister Mary Ann Tilton. He leaves his 5 children: son; Patrick, daughters; Diane Kusman, Mariane Watkins, Carrie Kline (Rich) and Katie Orscheln. He also leaves 10 grandchildren; Jason, Lisa, Emily, Christie, Katy, Riley, Ryan, Michael, Ashley, Alex, 10 great- grandchildren: Easton, Ella Kate, Annie, Charlie, Noah, Luca, Hudson, Henry, Freddie and another great granddaughter due in April. He also leaves his brother Michael J McCowen.

He was active in his children’s formative years as a manager and coach of girls softball teams. He was a member of the Cure’ of Ars Parish for greater than 50 years, and was a member of the Parish Council. He was active at Bishop Miege High School, assisting with fund raising efforts, and the auction. He was a Bishop Miege School Board member, and later President of the School Board in the late 1970’s.

He loved to travel with Genie as they made many pilgrimages to Ireland his favorite place on earth. He took each of his children and several of his grandchildren to Ireland to teach them about their roots, share his knowledge, and introduce them to their distant relatives.

He was also a parishioner at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Laurie, Missouri for 50 + years. Many memorable summer family weekends were spent at the McCowen Lake home as the children were growing up, his second favorite place on earth. After Genie’s passing, he retired to his lake home in Sunrise Beach, Missouri.

He never met a stranger and touched many lives with his Irish humor and wit. Faith, family and friends were the words he lived by. Recently, he told friends and family the he lived a blessed life and couldn’t ask for more.

The Family would like to thank the staff at Ascend Hospice especially Shannon, Kim, Jordan, and Kirsten who helped the family during the last days of his illness.

The Rosary will be Thursday December 5th at 9:30 am, the Visitation at 10:00 am followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am all at Cure’ of Ars Catholic Church 9405 Mission Rd. Leawood, Kansas.

To one of my first and best friends at the lake. I'll miss all the good times and stories we shared over your trips to Ireland, your beautiful family, your golf cart rides, boating, waverunners, classic cars, cigars and your beloved Tullamore; even plumbing! You'll never be forgotten here at the lake Mac, we all loved you! I hope they enjoy your company in heaven as much as we did here on earth! You sure made your mark my friend, Godspeed!

To the McCowen Family, So sad to hear about the loss of your father, Pat. I remember he and your mom with such fondness after the death of my mother. And his companionship to "Bud" at that time and thereafter. Such a wonderful man, husband and father. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Mary Alice Beebe

I am going to miss Mac and the stories he would share at the lake with us. My first and only trip to Ireland was with Mac 2 years ago and it was the trip of a life time. He was an excellent tour guide, navigator and a true friend. Our condolences to his wonderful family.

I have many fond memories of visiting your home. As a kid I told Pat I wanted to be Fred Flinstone. Every time I saw him, he made a point of reminding me. He was an awesome man and will be missed.

Dear McCowen family, I sure am sorry for the loss of your dad. What a great man he was! I enjoyed him as my softball coach when I was young and as my plumber when I grew up. He had such a great twinkle in his eyes! You are in my thoughts and prayers.

To one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met in my life! So many memories of the DeLaSalle days and the good times we had with you and Genie at that fabulous house on Mohawk. Every function we had was planned there. RIP my good friend. Your place in heaven is assured.

Mary Jean (Dolan) Dalton = 2nd cousin to Pat. Kathleen is ‘Jean’s’ daughter. ,Kansas City ,Missouri

Pat was the quintessential Irishman …such a warm, loving heart - always ready with a big smile and a great story! I feel so fortunate to have met him & to have shared what we knew about our family’s history. Pat’s grandpa (Maurice O’Donoghue) and Jean Dalton’s grandma (Bridget O’Donoghue Scanlon) were siblings. They raised their families together in KC. Pat’s mom (Agnes) & Jean’s mom (Mary Jo Scanlon Dolan) were born within 3 months in 1908! In 2017-18, Pat & I spent several days together at his kitchen table - exchanging family stories & photos. Before we knew it, the sun had set. We’d spent 7-8 very enjoyable together before we knew it. Thank you, Pat, for sharing your time & talents with me. I will always keep you in my heart!

Uncle Pat was always fun and loud. It was always a treat when he came over, we all looked forward to it. We always had to be prepared for his practical jokes, of course we never were. He remembered every one as well to tease me with- 30 years later! I would love to have gone to Ireland with him, how fun would that have been. I’m sorry you kids I hope he has a grandchild that reminds you of Pat!

My heart goes out to all the family and friends of this wonderful man. I was so blessed to spend time with Max. I have only known Max for the past 6 years but we became close. I had just moved to the lake full time when we met, and we became close. Because of our KC connection. Fun times listening to his stories of KC and Ireland. Thank you for sharing Max with us here at the lake. Prayers with all of you and knows there’s one more angel looking over you. Kim Oswald
