Jul 13, 1976---Sep 08, 2024

Steven Michael Gutschenritter, 48, of Gardner, KS, passed away Sunday, September 8th, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend to all who knew him. Steven was born July 13th,1976, in Neodesha, KS, to Tony and Linda (Lies) Gutschenritter. Following his childhood on the farm and adolescence at Kansas Neurological Institute in Topeka, KS, he was cared for by Johnson County Developmental Supports, JCDS, in Lenexa, KS, where he also worked for many years. While Steven was physically and mentally challenged his entire life, he faced those challenges courageously and with a lot of laughter. Along his life’s journey, he encountered many wonderful caregivers whose love and compassion enriched Steven’s life and brought true purpose to theirs.

He is survived by his parents, sister Gina (Matthew) Bednar, brother David (Vicky) Gutschenritter, as well as nieces and nephews, Claire, Jacob, John, Gabriel, and Gianna. He will also be greatly missed by his JCDS family as well.

A rosary will be prayed at 4:45 PM followed by a visitation from 5-7:00 PM Wednesday, September 11th, at the Porter Funeral Home, Lenexa, KS.  Funeral Mass will be 10:00 AM Thursday, September 12th, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 12800 W. 75th St., Shawnee, KS, with interment and luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Friends of JCDS, www.friendsofjcds.org, 10501 Lackman Road, Lenexa, KS, 66219.

Steve was such a blessing to those who knew him! He had this way of turning his face upwards then his eyes would shine, his grin would grow, his sneaky laugh would start - you would know to look around because he most likely snuck something off of a table and was holding it out to his side ready to drop it! Another sneaky laugh and he knew he had you! The smile would grow bigger and there it was… pure joy and happiness! That was Steve -it was all he asked for and he gave it in return. I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to be one of those people who were blessed by Steve! I have his family, friends and caregivers in my thoughts and prayers. Sharon Holley

Steven, May our buddy who fought so hard to live find... peace, no pain, freedom to run, swim, sit on grandpa's lap again, throw balls, see again and watch football just a few inches from the TV, and always remain ornery. Such an integral part of our family's lives, activities, love, and bond. He will be greatly missed but is finally at peace. Steve most definitely will guide us and cause mischief in our lives from beyond. Love love love and miss you, Steveo! Thank you and be free!

Steve had a priceless smile, infectious laugh, refreshing sense of humor, and ever so slighly ornery nature that touched the lives of so many. He gave so many of us countless, precious memories that we will forever remember and treasure. My thoughts and prayers are with his incredible family and all who loved him.
