Michael Claud Gafney, 83, Overland Park, KS, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at Westchester Village of Lenexa after a very short time in hospice care surrounded by his family.  

Mike was born in Kansas City, Missouri to C. Austin Gafney and Maxine Keene.  He graduated from Westport High School in 1959 and met his loving wife, Janet, while working at First National Bank of Kansas City. Michael graduated from the University of Kansas in 1964 with a degree in Architectural Engineering and very soon afterward married Janet. Mike worked as a Civil Engineer for the Kansas Department of Transportation the entirety of his career before retiring in 2002.  Mike and Janet spent a wonderful retirement together traveling, enjoying grandchildren, gardening and spending time with their friends.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Janet, and his brother Tony.  He is survived by his son Andrew Gafney, Shawnee, KS, his daughter and her spouse Jennifer and Jeff Martin, Lenexa, KS, and grandchildren Abigail Gafney, Tyler Martin, and Chad Martin.  He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 2nd at 9:30 a.m. followed by a funeral service 10:30 a.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church 11300 W. 103rd St., Overland Park, KS 66214.  Burial will be held at Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
