Cecil Rex Miller

Cecil Rex Miller, age 91, of Lenexa, Kansas, passed away on May 3, 2024.  

 

He was born on January 4, 1933, in Walnut, Kansas, and lived most of his life in the greater Kansas City area.  Known as “old buddy” to his family, Cecil was a true friend to everyone he met, and he will be greatly missed.

 

Cecil grew up in Baldwin City, Kansas, and attended Baker University, where he met his wife, Carol Lee; they would enjoy a happy marriage lasting 63 years.  He earned his master’s degree from the University of Kansas.  Cecil served in the US Army from 1954 to 1956, and later enjoyed a successful career as a CPA and Partner with the Peat Marwick Mitchell (KPMG) accounting firm from 1957 to 1990.

 

He was a devoted member of Old Mission United Methodist Church.  In his retirement years, Cecil enjoyed hiking, jeepingand skiing in the Colorado mountains.  He especially cherished traveling the world with his beloved wife, Carol Lee, and making lifelong memories with his grandchildren.

 

Cecil is survived by his sister, Lela Mae Beach; his brother, James Miller; his daughter, Carla Reynolds; his son, Clark Miller; 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Lee Miller.

 

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, May 10, 2024, at Old Mission United Methodist Church in Fairway, Kansas.  Burial will be at the Oakwood Cemetery in Baldwin City, Kansas.  In lieu of gifts or flowers, the family requests any contributions in Cecil’s honor be made to the Old Mission Foundation, or to the KPMG Cecil Miller scholarship fund at Baker University.

I joined Peat Marwick when women were a rarity in the accounting profession. Cecil was a gracious mentor to me and responded to my questions thoroughly, and without a hint of condescension which they may well have deserved. Occasionally when my young daughter would be working with me in the office on Saturdays, Cecil would allow her to play with his many colored pencils. He always made her feel welcomed, even though she was undoubtedly more of a nuisance. He was a fine man and had a big impact on my career. My deepest condolences to the family.

Carla, I am so sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. He was such a great friend to my dad. Your dad helped my dad a lot in the Delt house. Your mom was great friends with my mom and my mom will be really sad to hear this. After my dad died your dad wrote my mom a really nice letter that she cherishes. Cecil was such a JEWEL and a treasured friend! One of the best Trustees Baker ever had! As the Campus Nurse during his tenure on Trustees he was always making sure things were ok with the Health Center and as a fellow Delt, Bob enjoyed his times visiting with Cecil...especially over Baker football! God's love and His peace be with you all as you hold on to happy memories!

I enjoyed getting to know Cecil through our monthly Midwest Investors dinner meetings, most years at Milburn CC. He was a quiet and kind individual and seemed to always enjoy the discussions and involvement with the many friends he had in the club. He was a true gentleman.

So sorry to hear about Cecil's passing. We both grew up in Baldwin City, KS and went to Baldwin High School together. Cecil's father, Rolla, was a good friend of my father, Ed Rockhold. I have many good memories of Cecil. He graduated from high school the year before I did. When I was in high school (and afterwards) I worked with Cecil's brother-in-law at Robinson Hardware Store in Baldwin. I always enjoyed working with him too. My sincerest sympathy to all the family.
