Sep 27, 1930---Mar 21, 2024

Virginia Lee (Nelson) Logan passed peacefully in her sleep at her home in the early morning hours of March 21, 2024.  Virginia was 93 years, 5 months, and 24 days.

Virgina was welcomed into the world on September 27, 1930, to her parents Ed and Dorothy (Street) Nelson, and two sisters Betty, and Wilma Jean.  She was the youngest daughter, and the middle child once James and Charles were born.  She was born on the family homestead northeast of Jamestown, Kansas, the homestead was founded by her Great Grandfather Nels Nelson (Niels Nielsen), and the house built by her Grandfather Christ Nelson, aided by her father Eddie when he was a young boy.

Virginia was raised on the family’s homestead, in a home that included her Grandfather Christ Nelson, until his passing.  As a young girl, she was surrounded by a large extended family and developed close relationships with her Great Aunt Sophia (Gertsen) Nelson, who was her Grandmother’s Marie (Gertsen) Nelson’s twin sister, and her cousin Della who lived on the farm next door.  Virginia would also visit her Street Grandparents in Republic County, Kansas and enjoyed spending time with her mother’s sister Aunt Grace (Street) Sanford, who was a schoolteacher.

Virginia attended the rural elementary school near the farm, until high school, when she went to town to attend Jamestown High School.  She graduated high school as a member of the class of 1948.  She played the cornet in the marching band.  Her senior class took a trip to Kansas City, Missouri, where she enjoyed visiting the sites with her friends.

The summer after high school graduation Virginia headed to Hays, Kansas to earn her KSTC. In the fall she began teaching in rural schools near Jamestown, Kansas.  By 1952, Virginia had saved enough money to enroll at Marymount College in Salina, Kansas, accepted into the Nursing program. Virginia along with her cousin Darlene Nelson went to school at Marymount, to study nursing.  Virgina and Darlene quickly became friends with Mary (Perdew) Logan, and they remained lifelong friends.  As planned, she graduated in May 1955 with a nursing certificate along with her two friends. While attending Marymount a friend told her that his brother serving with the Army in Korea would like to get some letters.  Once receiving his address Virgina began writing to L. Richard (Zoomer) Logan, until his return when they finally met.  The letters continued while Virgina finished her nursing studies until their wedding on September 25, 1955, in Jamestown.

The Newly weds moved to Kanss City, Kansas, and Virginia became employed at Saint Mary’s Hospital, working in the nursery with children in KCK. They were soon able to purchase a home in the Quindaro Homes, before purchasing a three-bedroom ranch home in western KCK, where they raised three children Denise, Michael, and Patrick.

As a Mother Virginia enrolled her children in music lessons, made Denise’s dance recital costumes, assisted the Camp Fire Girls, became a Den Mother for both Mike and Pat’s Cub Scout packs. She spent many hours during the summer watching her children play on ball teams.  She took the children on weekend camping trips to the various lakes, and  family vacations touring the United States camping out along the way.  She also used Zoomer’s TWA employee pass to take her family to Europe multiple times.  Virginia took her children to visit Grandparents in Scottsville, Kansas, and her beloved family farm that she grew up on, where her children played, before learning to help with the summer harvest.  For many years she took her children back home for Memorial Day weekend to decorate the grave sites of past family members, sharing stories about their lives.  She also found time to sew, attend ceramic and Wilton cake decorating classes, preserving vegetables and jellies/  She baked bread weekly and became famous for her CINNAMON ROLLS. Virginia and Zoomer had a running weekend Pinochle game with friends and family serving homemade ice cream for dessert.  Virginia worked in several KCK hospitals and nursing homes as a nurse while she raised her family, and even sold Avon door to door.

Once she and Zoomer were able to retire they enjoyed touring the United Sated up grading from the “Orange Camper” to the “Green Beast” motor home still camping as they went along.  They used Zoomers TWA retirement benefits to travel to Europe, The Holy Lands, and Hawaii with friends and family.  She planned school and family reunions, enjoyed visits from her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and welcomed any family member into her home to visit for as long as they wanted. Virginia still gardened, she belonged to Golden Age Club, Victory Hills Senior Group, Animal Crackers, Security Bank Group, the Chipper Club at Providence Medical Center.

Virginia was preceded in death by her beloved husband L. Richard (Zoomer) Logan, parents Ed and Dorothy (Street) Nelson, siblings Betty (Virgil) Weigel, Jean (Verner) Wagner, James (Glenda) Nelson, Charles Nelson.  In-laws John and Eunice (Darling) Logan, brother, and sister in-laws Carl (Bernice) Logan, Verie (Richard) Schwerdtfeger, Betty (Robert) Fulton, Mary (Sherman) Hicks, Wilma (Fred) Alcorn, Warren (Mary) Logan.  Nieces and nephews Sandra Hicks, Beverly Inskeep, Diane Alcorn, Deanna Fulton, Bradley Logan, Roger Logan.  Her beloved Dogs Brownie and tipper, Cats Snowball, Zooey and Fluffy.

I just read about Virginia's passing. I am so sorry and very sad. I got to know Virginia when I started selling Avon. We went to a lot of Avon meetings and Avon Luncheons together. We would take turns driving. She didn't live very far from me. I was able to go see her this past summer and we had a nice visit. I regret not getting out to see her again. I love you Virginia. R.I.P. Even though you were in pain you always had a smile on your face. My thoughts and prayers to all of the family.
