Mar 30, 1958---Mar 17, 2024

Janet Hermes Day, 65, of Olathe, KS, passed away on Saturday, March 17 of Ovarian Cancer.

Janet was born on March 30, 1958 in Laramie, Wyoming to John V and Virginia Ward Hermes.  The family moved to Overland Park, KS when she was eight months old.  She grew up there and graduated from Shawnee Mission South High School in 1976.  From there, she attended Emporia State University where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority.  She was voted Blue Key Darling in 1978.  She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and graduated in December, 1979.

Janet began her career as a Service Marketing Rep for Diebold Bank Equipment in March, 1980.  After four years, she spent the majority of her career in the contact lens industry, beginning as a Sales Manager for Wesley Jessen/Ciba Vision/Alcon from 1984 through 2011.  She was then employed at Firestone Optics/Diversified Ophthalmics/ABB as a Distributor Sales Representative for eight years.  She ended her career as a Sales Manager for VSP until her retirement in 2021.  Janet chose to treat her job in the eye care industry as a “Vocation”.

Janet was a devoted Christian, mother and loyal friend.  Her proudest achievements were her daughter, Rachel LaFreniere, and her son, Riley Day. She was very involved with her children when they were growing up and in school, and she volunteered for many activities.

Her Catholic faith was strengthened when she made her Cursillo in 2007. Her daily rosary recitations were what gave her strength and fortitude.  She was an active member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Olathe for 37 years.

Along with her devout love for her husband, Steve, her pride in her children, and her love for the Catholic faith, she was a loyal friend.  Janet maintained several friendships from her childhood that lasted over 50 years, especially her dearest friends, Sue Felker Shehan and Susan Sisk Harding.  Janet also had deep friendships and love for many of her other close friends, cousins and relatives, sorority sisters, and YMCA buddies.

Janet is survived by her loving husband, Steven Traylor, and her children Rachel LaFreniere (Phil), Riley Day, and her bonus son, Jordon Traylor. She also leaves behind her granddaughters, Cecilia and Sloane LaFreniere.  Janet is survived by her siblings Victoria A. Rindt, Lynda H. Heimbach (Jeff), Rev. Michael P. Hermes, and Douglas J. Hermes.  She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and their children.  She was preceded in death by her parents, John V. and Virgina A. Hermes, her brother, Thomas S. Hermes, and her brother-in-law, Daryl E. Rindt.

The Rosary will be prayed at 9:30 a.m. with the Funeral Mass following at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 23, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 21650 W. 115th Terr. Olathe, KS.  Private family burial.

The family would like to thank KU Medical Center and Olathe Hospice House for their care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Catholic Church Building Fund in Olathe, KS.

Her glowing personality and the love she shared with her sorority was so dedicated. She attacked everything in life with that fierce passion that we were lucky to witness. What an example for all of us. God got one of our earthly angels. Love and Prayers to all of you. May God comfort you with love. Lori Johnson

I first met Janet in 1985 when I was a new hire and she was a company trainer. We spent a week driving through 1/2 of Kansas visiting optometric practices. It was both an enjoyable learning and a fun experience. We have been friends ever since. Wishing comfort to her family and many happy memories.

I met Janet at Firestone Optics Inc. shortly after I bought into the company. I was on my knees fixing floor tiles when she walked in. She looked down at me and said something to the effect of "You may rise now." First meeting!! She knew how to win friends and influence people in a very high energy way. Janet was one of 3 local CL sales reps that greatly helped us turn around the company image. They were unpaid promoters. And Janet was the most dynamic and forceful (surprised?). She later joined the company and immediately was able to "s/tell" the clients that they were therefore to switch more of their other CL purchases over to Firestone Optics. Techs and OD's knew they could count on Janet's valued guidance. Janet's EBULANT personality was her most recognizable characteristic, but she was smart, conscientious, and supportive of her friends, clients, an coworkers. And, her sensitivity to anyone having difficulties was cause for immediate genuine sympathy, and offers of support and encouragement. Janet's brain made her quick learner. Her heart made her an unforgettable friend.

Although we were based in different areas of the country, we would always chat at our many sales meetings and catch up on our families and our lives. My condolences to Janet's family. Janet has always held a special place in my heart and I will miss her dearly. We had a lasting friendship that spanned 56 years. Although our lives went in different directions and we were separated by many miles for the last 35 years, we always managed to stay in touch. Janet was such a loving person. Never forgetting, always loving, and reaching out to her friends. We would spend hours on the phone laughing and reminiscing about all our youthful antics. I know Janet's strong faith always got her through the hard times in life and has now brought her to God's door. I love you, Janet. Tootie

I can hear your voice telling stories of our customers, like it happened a week ago. You would instantly make friends feel like best friends. No doubt you are in a better place. However, I am sure going to miss you down here.

Worked with her ,Smithville ,Missouri

Where to begin with Janet, I started working in the contact lens world in 2001 and she had already established herself is one of the best if not the best in the industry. She was so great with her accounts. It seemed like everybody loved her, and it wasn’t until she left Alcon To join Firestone that I got to see the true magic, at that point Janet and I got to work together for the first time ever and to see her in action was a site to behold and she was amazing with her customers and I thought we worked together incredibly well. I can’t believe she’s gone. She was one of those people in my life that I would call every few months to catch up with most importantly she could talk about her kids and her family and Lord Jesus Christ, I know where she’s at and I know she’s happy but I will truly miss her. God bless you
