May 08, 1979---Feb 22, 2024

Michael Jerard Nunn, 44, passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 22.

Mike was born May 8, 1979, in Kansas City Missouri, to Morris Jerard “Jery” and Jeanne Hancock Nunn and grew up in Lenexa, Kansas.  Mike received a GED and attended Johnson County Community College.   He worked at several jobs including one with Deluxe Check Printers.

In 2005, Mike sustained an injury which rendered him paralyzed at the T-10 level.  He then spent an extended period being hospitalized in several facilities.  Upon being released and despite his disability, Mike took up residence in Olathe, Kansas, at the Liberty Christian Life Center and was employed for a while near his home.  The conditions caused by his injuries required the in-home assistance of others.  He spent the rest of his life at the Life Center.

While at Liberty Christian, Mike felt a connection with God and formed a friendship with a number of the other residents.  He became proficient on his computer and pursued hobbies he could undertake while at home.

Mike enjoyed heavy metal music, playing games on his computer and an occasional book.  His favorite thing was diet cola.   Neighbors often saw him on the sidewalks around his home.  He was a frequent shopper at the local Walgreen's.

Although being confined to a wheelchair, Mike never lost his sense of humor.  He was always kidding members of his family.  He often came up with a clever remark.

Mike always maintained a close connection to his parents who frequently visited him and assisted in his care.  Of late, he was assisted in his home and daily life by a Personal Care Attendant, Esther, for whom he developed a deep affection.  “Thank you, Esther!”

During the last year of his life, Mike unfortunately suffered from a number of maladies, including terminal cancer.  While all that kept him hospitalized or in skilled care, he never gave up his strong desire to be at home.

Mike is survived by his parents, his sister Anna Bomhoff (Greg), his nephews, Andrew and Brett Bomhoff, his aunt and uncle, John and Linda Hancock, and many cousins who will all miss him.  There are as well a number of friends who will be sad to see he passed.

On Monday, March 4, there will be visitation at 2:00 followed by a Celebration of Life at 3:00 at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa Kansas 66215.   In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Mike's honor be made to the Liberty Christian Life Center, 572 East Park, Olathe, Kansas 66061.

I grew up with Mike in the same neighborhood and went to school together beginning at Mill Creek Elementary. To this day, Mike is one of the funniest people I've had the pleasure of knowing and he could always make those around him laugh. I have many fond memories of playing sports with Mike or spending the night at this house when we were kids, watching movies and playing games. My deepest condolences to the Nunn family - I am very sorry for your loss, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

My heart goes out to everyone in Mike's family. I just added a photo to this site, and wanted to back it up with a story. Mike and I spent a lot of time hanging out at my house on The Plaza when I was in college and if we went it out it was usually to see some bands. One night we wanted to go see THE URGE in Lawrence but I was supposed to go to work. So Mike and I came up with a plan involving a perfectly timed phone call. Just as I'm walking into the restaurant the manager is hanging up the phone and says, "oh Jeff thank goodness you're here. Your sister has been in an accident on your neighbor's trampoline and they need you at the hospital to sign paperwork since your parents are out of town." The thing is, I'm an only child so no one was ever in danger. Mike played the part of the concerned neighbor perfectly and got me out of work and that night was one of the best shows I can ever remember. This is one of my favorite Mike Nunn stories and my favorite concert stories of all time. I'm deeply going to miss you Mike. You were my best and most unique friend of all time. I love you.

There are very few memories I have from my youth that don’t involve Mike. I have known him since kindergarten, and we grew up in the same neighborhood. There are no words I can say that will express my sadness at his passing. My condolences to the Nunn family.

Mike was one of the first people I remember at Mill Creek Elementary School when we arrived in the late 80's. We had lived in Missouri off of Prospect and moved into the Shawnee Mission area of Kansas, knowing no one in this very different world.  He was not the person with the largest physical stature, but always carried a tremendous presence, nonetheless, whenever he was in the room. His kindness, humor, and willingness to help were always present.  I can't imagine there wasn't a student in that school building, nor in it's outdoor trailers that once existed, that he wasn't able to make laugh.  Being young and new to Johnson County, I assumed that the ability to generate laughter was still one of the primary currencies people used to evaluate others and make sense of the world -- and by that metric I assumed Mike would someday be running uncontested for Mayor of anywhere in America. He could make you laugh with references to bizarre sitcom ideas (some of which came true), inside jokes about niche publications like Reader's Digest, or nicknames of baseball players from the 70's that predated us. He was always quick on his feet - both physically and mentally.  It was fruitless to try to keep up with him. He seemed to be operating at a different level than the rest of us, playing a three-dimensional version of chess, while we languished on checkers. He didn't seem to sweat the small stuff, worry about coming challenges,  or get frustrated by life. He had a James Bond-esque quality that made it seem like he had things figured out or would find a way to make things work out in the end. he embodied a kind of charisma that I assumed everyone else admired and envied. He also maintained an exterior that resonated as nothing other than brave and resilient.  During one particularly, brutally hot Summer afternoon - our baseball practice at Mill Creek, went from exhausting to terrifying as a freak accident led to Mike sustaining a terrible puncture in the bottom his foot. There was always a superhuman quality to Mike, and to this day my prevailing image of that incident is the fact that he continued to limp around the bases rather than succumb to the pain and surrender. I can't recall if we eventually helped him limp off the field and into my Dad's van. I just remember him wanting to maintain and go about like everything was going to be okay. I briefly glanced at what had happened to the bottom of Mike's foot and almost immediately lost whatever was in my stomach.  I don't think I would have stepped anywhere near a baseball field ever again if such a thing had happened to me, but Mike was back to his old self soon thereafter -- trying to help our fledgling team, the "Tigers," piece together a rare win at Johnson County 3&2.  He assumed an unofficial leadership role, leading by example, and toughing things out, even when everything seemed to work against him.  Mike's persistence was always infectious - and his presence was always invaluable. He taught us to be brave, whether it be at Worlds or Oceans of Fun, or amongst a group of new classmates, who you felt like you had nothing in common with.

Jery and Jeanne: I am so sorry to learn of Mike's death. It sounded like he was a joy to be around. I am glad he found God and pray he is with Jesus right now. I remember him selling Scout cookies at the office. I know you miss him horribly. Have wondered about you over the years. Hope this message finds you active and well. Vicki Spruill
