May 23, 1934---Dec 24, 2023

James E. Fagan, 89, Overland Park, KS, passed away Sunday, December 24 following a very brief illness. Visitation and memorial service will be held January 31, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS.

Jim was born May 23, 1934, in St. Louis, MO, son of James and Dorothy (Kline) Fagan. He joined the Army immediately after high school where he served in the Special Forces as a Green Beret paratrooper.  During his service, Jim was sent to the VA Hospital in Excelsior Springs, MO, where he met his future wife. They married and moved to Kansas City while he pursued degrees in mathematics and physics at William Jewell College in Liberty, MO. Upon the birth of the first of their two daughters, they moved to Lenexa, KS, at which time Jim entered the computer industry when it was barely in its infancy—first at Swift & Company, and later at Associated Wholesale Grocers where he eventually served as Vice President. Later, he joined Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City, where he worked until his retirement at age 70.

Jim had two very different (but equally endearing) sides to his personality: A tough, Special Forces veteran who was always there to rescue you when your car battery died and a gentle soul who cried in movies, enjoyed art films, owned his own copies of the Sondheim musicals Into the Woods and Company, attended live theatre throughout Kansas City, learned to play classical guitar, and never missed a performance by his Broadway actor-singer daughter, Val.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Danny and Lynne Fagan, and his former wife, Shirley Fagan. He is survived by his beloved daughters Valerie Fagan and Stephanie Hanaway, son-in-law (and buddy) Ken Hanaway, and many cherished nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary (Contribute to A&F – Always and Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary).

Stephanie & Val, I am so sorry to hear about your dear father. He lived an incredible life. He was truly a renaissance man. An honorable WWII vet who loves theater. I am so lucky that I got to meet him while attending the theatre. Again, I am so sorry for your loss...he will be missed. Love, Jan Rogge

Steph and Val, I am so sorry for your loss. I had no idea he was a Green Beret paratrooper - so impressive. He was always so sweet when he came to see the plays. Much love to you and the family.

Jim Fegan was one of best friends I've ever had. We worked together at Blue Cross for 20+ years and shared a number of interests outside work including target shooting, fishing, and guitars. I have many great memories of the good times we shared at work and at play. Among those are the great times my wife Diana and I had with Jim when we met to enjoy one of his daughter Val's theatrical performances. He was always so proud of both of his daughters. My wife remembers him as bfeing such a gentleman who was always very caring of other people. Jim was a great friend and associate in many ways. I will miss him a lot.

Jimmie was one of my favorite people to work with at Blue Cross. We shared Army stories and tackled the problems at work. After retiring I would run into him and Charlie every once in awhile at the dinner theatre or out and about. The world has lost a true gentleman.

We were sad to learn of your father’s death and not 6 months after your mother’s. They were both good friends and good neighbors. And we sure enjoyed seeing you girls, Val and Steph growing up. And on occasion being our babysitter. Good memories. Blessings to all of you, Nancy & Jack Jorden
