Donald M. Maechtlen, 87, Overland Park, KS, passed away October 19, at the University of Kansas Hospital. A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 25, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 11300 W. 103rd St. Overland Park, KS. Private family inurnment will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.

Don was born October 25, 1935 in Clearwater, KS son of William and Mary Maechtlen. He served in the US Army. He graduated from Friends University with a degree in biology. Don worked as a federal revenue agent with the IRS for 37 years. His attention to detail and tenacious work ethic served him well in this field.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Charles Maechtlen. Don is survived by his wife of 62 years, Patricia Maechtlen, two daughters and their spouses, Marla and Bill Scott and Heidi and Sam Valenzuela, sisters Joan Fleming and Joyce Freeman, and grandson, Gabriel Valenzuela, and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

Don and Pat enjoyed many travel adventures after his retirement, exploring the US, Canada, France and Germany. As a great researcher, Don turned his interests to genealogy and traced his family’s roots back to the 1500s. Don enjoyed watching sports, especially the KC Royals and KU basketball. He was always versed in each team’s new recruits and prospects for the coming seasons. Don will be remembered as a kind, gentle man, but always with an unwavering strength. He was a loving and present husband and father, and a playful and attentive Popi.
