Jama Aileen (Catt) Carney of Lenexa, KS entered eternal life on October 9, 2023.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George Washington Catt and Mary Frances (Nelson) Catt, and her sister Joan Catt. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Mike, her sister, Susan Haygood of Rio Rancho, NM, her three daughters, Amy Patrick of Lenexa, KS, Jody Mitchell of Shawnee, KS, and Erin Johnson (Paul) of Lenexa, KS, and her five grandchildren, Olivia and Morgan Mitchell, and Henry, Clare, and Alex Johnson.
Jama and Mike were married on August 16, 1969 at Church of the Magdalen in Wichita, KS. After moving around the United States due to Mike’s job, they settled back in Wichita in 1983 in their College Hill home and lived there until moving to Lenexa in 2012 to be near their daughters and grandchildren.
Jama graduated from Wichita State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education in 1970 and spent her career teaching in elementary schools and preschools. She felt it was her mission in life to love and teach children. Most recently, she taught at Discovery Place in Wichita from 2000-2007 and Wichita Collegiate School from 2007-2012. She was also a Certified Lamaze Childbirth Educator for 30 years from 1979 – 2009.
Jama was an active volunteer at Good Shepherd Catholic Church and School in Shawnee, KS, serving in various capacities, but her most treasured role was teaching Children’s Liturgy during the Sunday morning Masses.
Visitation will be held beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 13th followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 12800 W. 75th St. Shawnee, KS 66216. Private immediate family only inurnment.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Good Shepherd Catholic School Guardian Angel Fund, 12800 W. 75th St., Shawnee, KS 66216, which provides tuition assistance to registered school families in need.
