John Royer Sheller Jr, Lenexa, KS, formerly of Shawnee, KS passed away peacefully Sunday September 10, 2023.  Graveside Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas.  In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in John’s name to the Great Plains SPCA in honor of his beloved cats Precious and Bailey. 

 

John was a beloved Husband, Father, & Grandpa.  John was born on June 7, 1933, in Kansas City, Mo.  He was a graduate of North Kansas City High School.  John served 4 yrs. active duty in the United States Air Force based in Amarillo, TX.  He was an Air Force Mechanic and Flight Instructor completing many related college courses and earning additional medals during this time. In June 1955, he married the love of his life, Dorothy (Sleyster-Woodring).  They spent 65 yrs. together before her passing in 2021.  John was a railroad engineer for 48 yrs. with Santa Fe-Burlington Northern and Amtrak.   Through the years, John enjoyed flying his personal plane and taking Amtrak train trips after retirement.  He was a passionate animal lover and enjoyed spending time with his family and grandkids.  John always had an interesting story to tell and could mesmerize you with his life journey.  John is survived by his children John Royer (Jay) Sheller III of Dallas, TX; David B, Sheller and his wife Stephanie of Kansas City, Mo; and Nancy K. Wilcox and her husband Arthur (Art) of Shawnee, KS; his grandchildren Cody Wilcox, Kylie Wilcox, Jackson Sheller, and Zachary Sheller, and numerous nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by his brother Joe Berry (Linda) of Chillicothe, MO and preceded in death by his sister Judy Yates.  John was loved by many and has left a lasting impression on all that knew him.

My uncle who I looked up to when I was growing up. I followed in his footsteps and entered the United States Air Force. He will be missed very much but we will see him again. My condolences to my cousin Nancy, Jay and David and their families. I love you uncle Jack and I am going to miss when you use to take me flying with you. I pray that God will keep you in his love. There no more pain for you uncle Jack only peace and love. Thank you for everything that you did for me uncle Jack!! To my cousins Nancy, Jay and David and families Mary and I pray that god will comfort you through this loss and hard time.
