May 16, 1984---Aug 17, 2023

Dr. Michael T. Hagan, 39, of Prairie Village, KS, passed away Thursday, August 17, 2023. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 24 at St. Ann Catholic Church, 7231 Mission Rd., Prairie Village, KS.

Mike was born May 16, 1984, in Wichita, KS, the son of Robert and Jane (Wolfe) Hagan. He was a graduate of Kapaun Mount Carmel in Wichita. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 2006 where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He attended the University of Kansas Medical school and earned his Medical Degree in 2010 with high honors. Mike then completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, followed by a fellowship in Gastroenterology at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. In 2016, he moved to Kansas City and joined Consultants in Gastroenterology in Kansas City, MO.

As a freshman at KU, he met the love of his life, Tami Ziegler. They married in 2007 at St. Lawrence Chapel at KU. He was a loving father and earned his girl dad degree with high honors. From teaching and coaching and knowing all their favorite songs, his family was his whole world. He loved sharing his passion for KU basketball and golf with his family. While at work he was a brilliant, conscientious, and well-respected gastroenterologist.

If love was his first language, laughter was his second. Mike will be remembered for his ornery personality and sense of humor that lit up every room. That knowing glance, mischievous smile, and big belly laughter made everyone he met forever richer. He was always there for anyone in need with fun, compassion, comfort, and support.

He is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Tami, his 3 beautiful and brilliant daughters Ellie (10), Riley (8), and Norah (6) and their family dog, Sparkles Rainbow. He leaves behind his parents, Bob and Jane of Wichita, his brother Mark (Carrie), and sister Sarah (Andrew) and a large extended family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to a memorial for his 3 children. https://gofund.me/dd94b02a

Hagan was one of the best GI Doctors I’ve had the pleasure of working with. He was a great teacher and so very knowledgeable and I learned so many of my skills while working with him. His smile and jokes will be missed and I hope his family knows just how much he would brag and talk about how much he loved you all especially his little girls❤️

Dr Hagan was one of my favorite doctors to work with. He was patient, funny, extremely smart and talented. He always tried to do what was right by his patients. Words cannot express how grieved I am for his family. There was no doubt he loved his wife and his girls. I remember him telling us about a daddy/daughter dance he was taking his girls to and how excited he was for it. He truly loved his girls. He will truly be missed.

Mike was a very special individual: dedicated, hardworking, caring, and smart, characteristics of an exceptional physician. I shared news of his passing with faculty members here at Baylor University Medical Center, Here are some of their comments: - This is heartbreaking - That's terrible - No words can express how sorry I am to hear - So sad and unbelievable - Such a great fellow and a great person - Such a tragic loss of a brilliant mind and kind soul - Such a shock, He was one of the most humble and hardworking doctors to pass through our program. - Mike was an outstanding, honest, hardworking, and brilliant young man. Such a loss. The world is a better place for him having been in it. I know that our fellows and faculty benefited by getting to know him. Our hearts go out to Tami and the girls at this sad time. Your friends in Dallas are grieving with you and trust that Providence will heal your grief in time.

My husband and I both had the pleasure of working alongside Dr. Hagan for a number of years (Mike at NKCH GI Lab and me at our Endoscopy Center North). We knew we could always count on him for his superior clinical judgment and expertise when taking care of his patients. We will miss his fun personality. Our hearts and prayers are with his wife Tami, his 3 precious daughters and their families during this unimaginable and difficult time. Mike was always smiling in high school and as a freshman it was easy to talk to him as he was not intimidating like a lot of new faces were. We became friends freshman year and I won tickets on the radio for an event that he wanted to go to and gave them to him and he was always thanking me, even up to senior year. I’ll remember Mike as being a friendly, happy, sweet guy. My prayers are with his family and friends, his wife and daughters.

Tami, girls and rest of Dr Hagan's family: I am very sorry to hear about Dr Hagan's passing. Dr. Hagan always had a calm demeanor when I would see him in the office. I would tell teenage daughter stories to him, since I had teenagers and he had young daughters. The GI community has lost one of the best and smartest physicians I knew.

Mike—-we are going to so miss you dearly. Off-hours, there was never a conversation without cracking a joke. Never afraid to voice an opinion, and if in occasion there was a respectful disagreement, you still could pull off a gentle joke. You carried yourself with such aplomb but could be goofy too. You are a crackerjack physician but most of all —the way you care, it made people feel important especially with your elephant memory. Your imprints remain everywhere, on everything, on everyone. Thank you Mike.

When I met Dr. Hagan, I asked if he was related to Phil and Maggie who I had been a nanny for many years ago. He said yes they are my uncle and aunt! We took a selfie and he sent it to them. It made my nerves at a new job disappear. Dr. Hagan was bright, skilled, and so very easy to work with. I enjoyed days assigned to working cases with him. It was a privilege to learn from him. My heart goes out to all his family and friends.

"Memories saturate my heart and the story of you spills from my eyes." ~ Grace Andren Dr. Hagan, I will miss your beautiful soul at work where you treated your patients with the utmost care and compassion; where you told stories about your family and inquired about our own. Every time I saw you, your first question was how was my dad getting along. I loved that about you. I will miss you, my dear friend, and my Tuesdays won't be the same without you. To the Hagan Family, We will not forget your husband, your dad, your son and your brother, Mike Hagan. He will always have a place in our hearts and minds. I pray you all find comfort in your shared memories and love for Mike.

My heart breaks for Tami, the girls and the family for such a tremendous loss. Dr. Hagan had a brilliant mind and a kind heart. He changed the world by making it a better place. He healed others, cared for those that worked for him and above all, he loved being a dad and a devoted husband. He will be missed.

The noun Star can often have a homonym definition. It can be a celestial body providing light for the darkened, direction for the lost, and it will readily challenge scientific hypotheses borne from the absence of irrefutable scientific facts. The noun Star can also be a human body providing health for the ailing, it gives of itself for the betterment of family, mankind, and community. Although homonyms, there is no dichotomy between Heaven’s Stars and Mankind’s Stars. Both were created with energies that serve a purpose, and both will retire their energies in Heaven’s time. Doctor Michael T. Hagan was an Earthling Star who will forever be just a prayer away. (my nephew)

Katie Edwards, CRNA Aug 20, 2023

I have many cherished memories of Dr. Hagan at work. Here's one I hope you can add to remembrances. More often than not, a patient would comment on how young Dr. Hagan appeared. Many would ask, “Are you old enough to be a doctor?” I figured he must have been tired of hearing it, because I was. However, he replied to his patient, “My mom dropped me off at work today.” We all laughed including the patient. Dr. Hagan had a great sense of humor. I know these words cannot take away the pain of loss, but I hope you find solace in knowing there are people who care about you. He always spoke so highly and lovingly of his family. Deepest condolences. Katie Edwards, CRNA

I am so devastated beyond what words can explain. He was a student of mine back on 2006 on a nephrology rotation. He is one of the best students I ever had in my 25 year’s career of teaching.
