Sep 01, 1929---Aug 11, 2023

Ruth Verna Taylor was born September 1, 1929, to William and Martha Backhus in Tampa, KS and died on August 11, 2023, at home in Lenexa, KS. She was a sister to four brothers and four sisters. On October 24, 1948, she married William Taylor, a union that produced four children, seven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. She was a loving mother and especially delighted in her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In 1953 Ruth and Bill were part of a group of charter members who formed Hope Lutheran Church in Shawnee, KS, and they were active members until a few years ago when health restricted them to their home. Ruth was a dedicated and diligent Bible student and was a beloved Sunday School and Midweek Bible School teacher for over 50 years, with sixth and seventh graders as her favorite class. She was a faithful member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and a Bible study circle.

Ruth was often the first to greet visitors to church or meet new neighbors. Children who were guests in her home were treated to tea parties, and door-to-door salespeople were offered lemonade and cookies. She always had time to listen to anyone who wanted to talk to her. Through the years she regularly visited homebound friends and was quick to provide food to friends and neighbors who were ill or grieving.

Ruth and Bill enjoyed a long and happy marriage of nearly 75 years, and they encouraged each other to live out their gifts. As Bill-and-Ruth, their quiet generosity and compassion touched many lives.

Ruth is survived by her husband Bill; children: Diane (Bob) Kelly, Dana Point, CA; Susan (Blake) Richter, DeKalb, IL; Kathleen (Mike) Dillmon, Olathe, KS; and Bill (Stacy) Taylor, Shawnee, KS; grandchildren: Bill (Ryland) Richter and David (Christina) Richter; Sarah (Vic) Rivas and Allison (Darren) Denney, and Spencer, Josie, and Oliver Taylor; and great grandchildren: Ellis and Alexandra Richter, Weston and Caleb Richter, and Adam and Devin Denney.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 15, from 9 to 11 am followed by a funeral service at Hope Lutheran Church in Shawnee, KS.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Hope Luthern Church in Shawnee, Kansas.

Tom and I pray for comfort and peace for the family. Ruth gave us all an example to follow as a Christian wife and mother. Her devotion to her Lord and her church family was amazing. Ruth has now won the victory of eternal life through her faith in Jesus Christ. We will see her again in Heaven.

We were blest to meet Ruth and Bill in 1983 when we joined Hope Lutheran. Spent time as a Sunday School teacher but couldn’t hold a candle to Ruth’s ability to share her love of the Lord. Comforted to know she is in the hands of Jesus. God bless Bill and her family.

I was fortunate enough to be able to meet with Bill and Ruth Taylor in their home many times over the past 30 years. Ruth almost always insisted that I come for breakfast or lunch, and if not for a meal, then cookies and coffee were mandatory. She was a delightful hostess and great conversationalist. She possessed the secret to a happy life...a great faith in God and gratitude for all that she had been given. God's peace to Bill, and to all who knew and loved her! Well done, good and faithful servant.

All three of our kids had Ruth as their Sunday School teacher. They all loved her. Many years later after they were grown up and moved away, she still asked about them by name. She was a lovely Christian lady who will always be remembered. Until we all meet again. Our condolences to Bill and all the family John and Elfriede Palo
