Jun 12, 1961---Jul 19, 2023

Leonard Eugene Carpenter “Gene”, age 62, passed away on July 19th, 2023, after bravely battling Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a category of Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD), for six years. Gene passed away peacefully surrounded by his devoted family, who were by his side throughout his entire journey.

Gene was born on June 12, 1961, to Leonard and Lillian Carpenter in Kansas City, MO. After graduating from Ruskin High School, Gene went on to obtain a Business Degree at Southwest Missouri State University. His sociability led him to a successful career selling corporate relocation services to fortune 500 companies, although his favorite job was a campus Miller representative.

During a Chiefs game watch-party in 1987, Gene was introduced to his future wife Christine (Chris) by his mother. They married on February 18, 1989, in Winter Park, FL and went on to have two beloved daughters, Mackenzie and Kelsie.

Together, Gene and Chris created a life full of love and adventure. They made many memories traveling, his favorite being their trips to Italy. They also loved attending Chiefs games and spending summers at Table Rock Lake. Gene will be remembered for his orneriness, “Yes Man” attitude, generosity, and his love for his family and friends. He was the life of every party and lived life to the fullest, going on outings and attending celebrations up until his final days thanks to the help of his dear friends, especially Tom and David Brown.

Gene is survived by his devoted wife of 34 years Christine (Stolfa), his twin sister Lene Carpenter, daughters Mackenzie Carpenter and Kelsie (Kyle) Zimmerman, grandson Miles Zimmerman, his dog Izzy, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Chris would like to thank everyone for the loving support shown to both Gene and their family these past several years. A special thank you for the support, education, and wisdom provided by CurePSP and The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration that was shared along this journey. Finally, a special thank you to the compassionate and excellent care provided by the staff at the Prairie Elder Care Farmstead for the past 18 months and Ascend Hospice.

Services will be held at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church on July 29th at 11:30am. 14251 Nall Ave. Overland Park, KS 66223

It’s a sad day, but I’m smiling thinking of Gene’s beautiful life and the times we shared together. It especially makes my heart happy to think of the past six years and how blessed Gene was in the face of this disease to have had Chris by his side as well as his amazing daughters, family, and friends. You all showed so much grace throughout this experience. I will always remember Gene by his big smile and kind heart, and I will never forget how others went above and beyond to make sure he knew he was loved! Rest in peace Gene.

From my point of view, this obituary totally nails it, down to the mention of Gene being a Miller rep and Izzy. He was the brother I never had. Gene LOVED being a dad and also the husband to Chris. Love you brotha ❤️

What a great guy who will be missed by so many. I enjoyed my early years at the lake making my way to see Gene and have a beer and a float. Always so nice to my family and asking how they are doing. RIP Gene. Heaven is getting a good one

I never remember a family gathering with Gene where he was not smiling, laughing or being playful. I remember watching Chiefs games on the old school big screen TV at “Uncle Leon and Aunt Lil’s” house with Gene and his Dad bantering about the game. The gatherings were loud, fun, and full of trash talking. Underneath it all was a deep connection and passionate knowing that those people would always have your back. Live hard, love hard, work hard, play hard…Gene gave it his all. He did not give up on himself or others, nor did his incredibly faithful and resilient family. Gene thank you for showing us what a passionate, devoted, purpose driven life looks like. And thank you to his family for loving him so deeply though the highs and the hardest moments.

Dear Chris & girls, Even knowing your beloved Gene was journeying his final days, it still takes our breath away when knowing he’s passed over to his eternal life. We will all meet up with him, surely again. For today, we give you ladies our respect & care. Gene was very loved by so many, Scott has fun & endearing stories of times spent with Gene & the TKE brotherhood. Genes smile was one of his amazing attributes, shared readily! My thoughts and prayers to Chris, Mackenzie, Kelsie, Lene and Izzy. My heart is broken hearing the passing of my good friend Gene. He loved and cherished each of you and all his friends. Gene was one of a kind. Gene was kind, generous, caring, thoughtful, full of energy, easy-going, considerate, loyal and fun to hang out with. Gene was always in a good mood even during his illness. If I was having a bad day, I would call Gene. Gene would cheer you up in a second. I was honored to have known Gene and to have him as one of my good friends. Love you Gene and may you rest in eternal peace.
