Marion Welch O’Neill, 81, Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on May 13, 2022 after a short illness. She was born July 24, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois to Howard Andrew Welch, Sr. and Sylvia Grigsby Welch. She is survived by her husband, Bernard V. O’Neill Jr.; three children: Patrick Flynn O’Neill (Ruth Castillo), Concord, CA; Marie Sylvia O’Neill (Daniel Zahn), Ann Arbor, MI; Catherine O’Neill Goodbred (Steven L. Goodbred Jr.), Brentwood, Tennessee; and grandchildren Colin Goodbred, Liam O’Neill (Madeline), Matthew Goodbred, Brendan Goodbred, Audrey Zahn, and Declan O’Neill. She is also survived by two siblings: Michael Francis Welch (Erin), Coronado Island, CA; and Sylvia Annette Welch (Deborah), Piermont, NY; and many nieces and nephews. Marion is preceded in death by her parents, Howard A. Welch, Sr. and Sylvia Grigsby Welch; her brothers Howard A. Welch, Jr., and John Bennett Welch; and her sister Nancy Marshall Welch.
Marion grew up in Wilmette, Illinois and attended St Francis Xavier Catholic School and New Trier High School. Marion enjoyed sailing as a Mariner Scout on Lake Michigan and played clarinet and piano. She received undergraduate and graduate degrees in mathematics and Spanish literature from Brown University where she met husband Bernard who she married on August 21, 1965. She was active in raising Patrick, Marie and Catherine while studying law at University of Missouri, Kansas City (UMKC). After earning her J.D., Marion clerked for Justice Anthony Kennedy at the Missouri Court of Appeals, practiced corporate law, and helped found the Low Income Tax Clinic at the UMKC School of Law in 1999. In her retirement, she served as treasurer of the Institut de la Causerie Francaise, Kansas City branch. She brought immense joy into the lives of her husband, children, extended family and friends and will be dearly missed.
Services: Rosary and visitation at Porter Funeral Home, on Tuesday May 17 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass to be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, on Wednesday May 18 at 11:30 a.m. followed by private internment at Resurrection Cemetery (all located in Overland Park, Kansas).
