Sep 09, 1950---Feb 07, 2022

John Patrick Carney, 71, of Prairie Village, Kansas, passed away on Monday, February 7, 2022.  The funeral Mass will be 11:00 am on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at the Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne Catholic Church, located at 5035 Rainbow Boulevard, in Mission Woods, Kansas, 66205.  Entombment will be at the Resurrection Cemetery, in Lenexa, Kansas.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Wounded Warriors Foundation, or the Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne Catholic Church.

John was born on September 9, 1950, in Kansas City, Missouri to James and Elizabeth (Snediker) Carney.  John retired from the United States Navy as a Senior Chief, after 21 years of service to his country.  Upon retiring from the United States Navy, John continued his service and began his career as a law enforcement officer, working for several law enforcement agencies, and ultimately serving as the Chief of Police at the Veteran's Affairs Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.  At the time of his retirement, John has served another 26 years protecting the community as a law enforcement officer, retiring as the Chief of Police for the VA Hospital.

John was a loyal member of the Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne Catholic Church and was one of the founding members and served several years as the President of the Knights of Columbus Council.  John loved serving his country and spent his entire life in the service of protecting others.  He also enjoyed going on cruises with Randi and his whole family.  John loved traveling to other countries, meeting new people, and exploring new experiences with those he loved.  In addition to love of riding horses, John was happiest when he was spending time with Randi, the love of his life, as well as his family.  While John dedicated his life to serving and protecting others, he will always be remembered as a wonderful and loving husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, godfather, and friend.  If he believed he could be of help to others in need, John was always there to lend a hand, provide support and care for those who needed it the most.  He leaves behind a family who loves his very dearly and seeks to keep him in their hearts.

John is survived by his wife of 54 years Randi Carney, his children Brigette and Jeff Batton, Patrick and Angel Carney, as well as Dayna Carney.  John also has seven grandchildren; they are Kyle, Justin, BriAnna, Violet, Alyssa, Lauryn, Rylee.  Emily Carney is John's God Daughter and they have always carried a very special bond.  John is also survived by his brothers and sisters:  Elizabeth Martin, Jim Carney, Don Carney, Joan Carney, Paul Carney, Therese Carney, Dan Carney, Tom Carney, Aimee Gabel, Chris Carney and many extended family members and friends.

This world is far, far better for having John in it, and he made his family far, far better for walking our path together.  We will always love him and keep him in our hearts.

I worked closely with John for many years when Tim Moore was the Chief of Police at the KCVA. He always had a smile on his face and a swagger in his walk. Sorry to hear of his passing, especially so soon after his friend and chief, Tim Moore. So many of the good ones are gone! He will be missed.

I am so sorry to learn of John’s passing. I worked with John for quite a few years as we were officers together. I left the VA Police to be a legal assistant with the VA. I would visit with my friend John many times in that position. I as John did, retired and we lost touch but he will always be remembered as a wonderful friend. I’m sending the warmest thoughts and prayers for john and family.

Chief Carney was always funny and very pleasant to work with. He has earned the respect of many fellow employees and Veterans. He had a cool demeanor when dealing with crisis and knew how to deescalate stressful situations. John, you will always be remembered as a kind hearted person and always got the job done when needed. Never said: "It's good enough." If it's not his best, he's not satisfied! Thanks, John for being a kind friend.
