Feb 23, 1958---Jul 24, 2021

Richard James "Rick" Komer who was born February 23, 1958 in Kansas City, Mo  passed away unexpectedly  on July 24, 2021.  Visitation will be from 5-6:00 PM followed by a Funeral Service at 6:00 PM, Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia St., Lenexa, KS.

He graduated from Hickman Mills High School in Kansas City, Mo.  He earned a bachelor's degree from University of Central Missouri and completed his Masters Degree from Rockhurst University.

Most recently Rick was a Systems Manager for KC Life Insurance and had spent his career working in Information Technology including a long tenure at Hallmark Cards, Inc.  Family was very important to Rick. He enjoyed being a Dad and Grandfather.  He cherished the friendships from his bowling teams, USBC Tournaments, golf teams, and his work.  He loved his sports and the companionship it brought.  He played on the KC Life Bowling and Golf Leagues, the Olathe East Bowling League, USBC Tournaments, and he was a huge fan of the KC Chiefs, KC Royals and the KU Jayhawks.  Rick loved to travel and he loved traveling with family and friends.  Some of his favorite trips were going on his annual bowling trips, Vegas Trips, taking Cruises, and he loved going down to Big Cedar Lodge with his Family.

Rick is survived by his wife, Denise, four children: Laurie (Tim) Yates, Michael Komer, Erin (Kenny) Brown and Matt (Lacey) Arnold, four grandchildren Hannah, Ben, Jack, Brooks, twin brother Bob (Sharon) Komer, sister Janet (Roger) Gelsinger and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making memorial contributions to “Harrison's Hydration Station” which will benefit the cancer patients at the KU Cancer Clinic receiving chemo treatments. Harrison Westerfield is Rick’s nephew and has been receiving chemo treatments at the KU Cancer clinic for almost 2 years. Harrison’s Hydration Station will provide better beverage options for patients receiving chemo infusions as well as the nursing and administrative staff at KU Cancer Clinic.  https://gofund.me/5a165e3f

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Rick's passing. My deepest sympathy goes out to Denise and the rest of Rick's family. Rick was a great friend and we had many great times together. I was fortunate to be a part of many of those USBC and league bowling teams that Rick so enjoyed. We also enjoyed many years of playing in the UCM Alumni golf tournament. He will be missed by many. May God comfort his family in this difficult time

Rick and I jibber-jabbered quite a bit when he was a Hallmarker -- was a pretty funny guy to talk to. So sorry to hear of his loss -- way too young. My heart reaches out to Janet and the Komer family.

I worked with Rick at Hallmark. He was smart and always helpful. But most of all had a smile, a laugh, and a story to share every time we met. One of my favorite people. God's comfort and peace to his family.
