Dec 01, 1930---Jul 15, 2021

Eloina Amada Torres peacefully passed away on July 15th, 2021.  She was born on December 1, 1930 in Ciego De Avila, Cuba to Amadeo and Edelmira Garcia.  Eloina was proceeded in death by her husband Mario (1999), with whom she enjoyed 44 years of marriage and shared in raising their family together.  She leaves her daughters, Lisa Edgington & Jennifer Israel (husband Ryan), 3 Grand Sons (Evan Edgington, Nathan & Nolan Israel), her sister Edelsa Perez and a large family of nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.

Leaving all their worldly possessions behind, Eloina & Mario fled Communist Cuba during 1962, in pursuit of freedom and the American dream.  In the ensuing years, she made it her life’s mission to help to bring other family members to America and through her relentless efforts she was instrumental in helping to make that happen.  Eloina was a wonderfully gifted Seamstress who ran her own business which was responsible for uniform styling alterations for Flight Attendants in TWA’s Breech Academy in Overland Park throughout the 1970’s.  She later went on to Manage Tailoring and Alterations departments for Saks 5th Avenue, Swanson’s & Hall’s from which she retired in 1999.  Despite having a hand in assuring impeccable styling presentation for many of Kansas City’s social elite, Eloina was probably most proud to have played a major role in designing & creating dresses for the weddings of both Lisa and Jenni.

In retirement, Eloina enjoyed passing the hours with Edelsa and her husband Orlando while sipping Cuban Café’ & watching daytime Novelas.  She found great joy in loving, cooking, and caring for her Grandsons and she played a prominent role in each of their lives but perhaps an especially noteworthy role for Evan, whom she took under her wing during a difficult period in his life until he found his own light through her guidance.  Eloina was a wonderfully loving, giving and generous woman who touched the lives of so very many close friends and family members.  She selflessly sacrificed to help so many of us during a time of need and her efforts will never be forgotten.  Love never dies and she will continue to live on within our hearts and through our own priceless memories.

Visitation will be held at Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa on Monday, July 26th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.  Private family burial will take place Tuesday, July 27th at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.

What words are adequate when faced with the loss of someone who meant so much to so many? All I can think of is that for those of us who were fortunate enough to call her a beloved family member, there is now a place in our hearts that can never be filled. Yet for all of us who knew her, both family and friends, our lives are better for her influence and the role she played in helping make the world a little nicer place for each of us. God bless you Eloina.

Dear Lisa,Jenny and Evan: Tia Eloina was a good daughter, a good sister, a good mother, a good grandmother and above all that a good Christian. Suffering was always part of her life, not only at the end, but she always confronted suffering with a positive Christian attitude. Now she is in a place with no suffering, no pain and no tears. Let us remember her in her days of youth and good health. She was the oldest of the grand children and the only one that was able to know abuelo Francisco that die at a very young age, being the first grand child she was born December 1st our grandmothers birthday. When we all were forced to leave Cuba she open her house to all the family members that wanted to come. She loved to travel and I was able to take her to Italy a trip that we both enjoyed very much. I always called her tia (aunt) because my mother and her were only 5 years apart and the youngest of all the uncles Amado and Eloina were born the same year, that is why she was named Eloina Amada. Now she is with Jesus and all the deceased family members, some day we will see her again and this time the family reunion will be forever and ever. My love, prayers and blessings to all the family. Luis
