James M. Reed, 79, Kansas City, KS, passed away Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at Kansas City Hospice House surrounded by his loving family. The Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 31, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 2203 Parallel, Kansas City, KS. Burial in the National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS. Friends may call 3-6 p.m. Sunday at the Porter Funeral Home, 1835 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, KS where the Rosary will be said at 5 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions to the K.C.K. Firefighters Relief Association, Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church or Kansas City Hospice House.


Jim was born March 14, 1930, in Fairmount, MO and had lived most of his life in Kansas City, KS. He had been a firefighter for the K.C.K. Fire Dept. for 30 years, retiring as a captain in 1985. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Marian Council of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 199 and Firefighters Local 64. Jim served in the Army as a paratrooper during the Korean Conflict. He was an avid fan of the Chiefs, Royals, T-Bones and K.U. and loved attending his grandkids and great grandkids sporting events. Jim was a kind, sweet and loving husband, father, grandpa, great grandpa and brother who loved his family unconditonally. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy C. and Juanita Cutler Reed, and three brothers, Melvin, Wally and Bob. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Shirley Reed, of the home, three children, Kim Frecks, Valley Falls, KS, Kevin Reed and his wife, Shannon, Basehor, KS, Kelly Reed, Kansas City, KS, grandchildren, Matthew Frecks and his fiance, Abby, Macy Frecks, Mollie Kearney and her husband, Jason, Jenny Lindsay and her husband, Corey, Ryan Reed, Courtney Reed and her fiance, Andy, Laura Reed, Brad Reed and Jessica, great grandchildren, Broc, Morgan, Addison, Brooklyn, Collin, Rylea and Jackson, a sister, Pat Jenkins, Kansas City, MO and two brothers and their wives, Roy and Marilyn Reed, Lenexa, KS, and Mark and Karen Reed, Kansas City, KS and numerous nieces and nephews.
