Aug 27, 1938---Jan 26, 2026

Stewart E. Nelson, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away Monday, January 26, 2026, at Lakeview Village in Lenexa, Kansas surrounded by family.

Stewart was born August 27th, 1938, the only child to Stewart Walter Eldridge Nelson and Helen Geraldine “Gerry” Johnson in New York City. He identified strongly with his Swedish heritage as well as his New York roots. His early summers were characterized by fun-filled days on the Bay in Long Beach New York with his extended family at their summer home, lovingly called “The Shack”. After high school, Stewart declined his appointment to West Point and instead followed a flyer he spotted in a church basement to Park College, where he met his wife, Jean, and forevermore claimed a home in Kansas.

Stewart and Jean married August 12th, 1961 and together they raised their three kids, David, Carolyn, and Stephanie in Wyandotte County.  Stewart, influenced by Jean, was very involved in daily activities with the kids as a coach, school volunteer, chauffeur, chef, and teacher.  Leading by example, Stewart taught his children to be open, kind and loving to all. After becoming empty nesters Jean and Stewart left their beloved Wyandotte County and moved to Shawnee, Kansas.

After earning his Master’s degree from the University of Kansas, Stewart began a career teaching American History at the Metropolitan Community Colleges - the only job he ever had. Stewart loved teaching and often said he never worked a day in his life. Known for impromptu lectures and never skipping a sign at a museum, his passion for education became a bedrock family principle.

Stewart never knew a stranger. He could strike up a conversation with anyone. More than that, he treated everyone he met with genuine kindness and generosity. He frequently emptied out his wallet to those in need and spent his retirement volunteering for organizations like Meals on Wheels and Wonderscope. Together, he and Jean were well-admired pillars of their Shawnee, Kansas community. No matter where he moved, he loved his neighbors with a fierce servant leadership.

He instilled these values into his nine cherished grandchildren who he loved adventuring with.  Adventures took them to Washington D.C., Alaska, Colorado, Florida, New Orleans, St. Louis and numerous local places where he made the ordinary feel extraordinary for them.

He is preceded in death by his parents, numerous extended family and friends and his beloved dog, Barney, who must be thrilled to see him now.

Stewart is survived by his wife and soulmate of 64 years, Jean Nelson, his three children, David (Laura) Nelson, Carolyn (Chris) Chaffin, Stephanie (Jason) Volk and his nine grandchildren Jace and Ireland Nelson, Claire, Chloe, Camille, and Connor Chaffin, Porter, Kelsey and Easton Volk

Family lore includes the fact that he had a near death experience as a three year old from a mustard allergy and his dad was struck by lightning along with many other stories that will bring smiles to our faces.

Celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at the Activity Center in the Heritage building at Lakeview Village in Lenexa, Kansas.  9100 Park.  Service will begin at 4:00 PM followed by a reception for friends to share stories and enjoy a slice of his favorite food.

Memorial contributions can be made to Shawnee Mission Meals on Wheels, 7810 West 79th street, Overland Park, Kansas 66204.
