Sep 19, 1950---Oct 11, 2022

Robert Terence ( Terry)  English passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 11, 2022. He was born on September 19, 1950 in Kansas City, MO and attended Saint Agnes grade school, Bishop Miege and Rockhurst College.

Terry had a successful basketball career playing at both Bishop Miege and Rockhurst.  Through sports, Terry developed a passion for teaching and coaching at Bishop Miege. He was particularly proud of the program he built throughout the 44 years he coached, which led to more than 900 wins and 23 state championships (one baseball). Most important to him, were the relationships he built, lives he influenced, and the friends he met along the way.   He appreciated the hard work and sacrifice of the players coaches and parents, and knew the program would not be where it is today without them.

Above all, Terry was a family man.  He loved the time spent with his wife, four kids and nine grandchildren.  He was married 42  years to Susie (Lindquist) English and she was his best friend and the love of his life.  Some of his favorite times were on family vacations, that included long roadtrips throughout the country, courtesy of “ Terry’s Tours”.    While teaching, coaching, and owning a lawn service, he always found time to be present at all of his kids and grandkids events.

Things that made him happy were hanging out with friends,  the Royals, Chiefs, KU, Michelob Ultras with ice and olives, playing golf, taking care of his yard,  Colorado,  Bigfoot, Westerns, the Hallmark Channel, and the Miege and St. Agnes communities.

Some of his dislikes were leaves, a close loss, acorns and referees, lol.

Terry is survived by his wife Susie, sons Mark (Diana), Greg (Jennifer), Jeff (Maddy), daughter Jenny (Brian) and grandchildren Jackson, Brett, Nora, Sam, Myles, Nate, Malia, Marcus and Cole. He also leaves 2 brother's, John (Brenda), Steve, 2 sister's, Patty Kunz (Bob), Barbie Lamping (Dick), his mother-in-law, Mary Ruth Lindquist, 2 sisters-in-law, Jane Druten (Bob), Amy McNitt (Jay), brothers-in-law, Jack Lindquist (Nancy), Bob Lindquist (DeDe), David Lindquist and numerous nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be held from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., Sunday, October 16 at the Bishop Miege High School Gym, 5041 Reinhardt Drive, Shawnee Mission, KS. The Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, October, 17 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 5250 Mission Rd., Roeland Park, KS.  Due to  limited seating at St. Agnes, additonal seating and livestreaming of the Funeral Mass will be available in the Bishop Miege School Gym. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Agnes Grade School or the “ Bishop Miege-Terry English Gym Renovation Project “ at BishopMiege.com/CoachEnglish

Classmate and teammate at Rockhurst College ,Rio Verde ,Arizona

Very sad to hear the news about Terry, and my condolences to Susie, their children and the entire family. Terry was a great athlete and teammate at Rockhurst. His path to successful coaching and teaching started on the court where he gave the spot light to others through his sharp passing and unselfish playmaking. Though we had not kept in touch since graduation, I watched with enjoyment Terry's successes at Miege. RIP, Terry. The starting 5 in heaven just added an all star. Jim Kopp

Susie and family, words are never enough to let you know how much Terry was loved and respected. The emptiness that remains can be almost unbearable. Hopefully the warm, outpouring being shown now, at this time, will help you through the coming days. You are in our thoughts and prayers. God bless you all!

I did not know Terry personally but one of my sons attended Miege and told me about him. To think of all the lives he changed and his dedication is rarely seen anymore. As a Catholic, I am proud of what he did for others. While he may not have been fond of referees, I am sure he made an impression on them and probably came out ahead. Heaven has a place for him. Sad to see such a strong influential man go but I bet he is coaching up there now. My sincere condolences.

Underneath Terry's gruff and impermeable exterior was a man with a kind heart and an intuitive sense of kindness. He exhibited this with both my youngest brother in the late 70s after our dad died--and also at Miege decades later with our daughters who were not as athletically gifted as their sisters. This kindness did not go unnoticed. I had shared this with Terry when he retired, and I think he heard me. With much sympathy and love to the one and only Terry English--who instilled the importance of tenacity and teamwork in every aspect of life. P.S. I do not regret reading the newspaper on the bench.

I knew Terry from working the lunches at Bishop Miege for over 21yrs, I was also known as The Cookie Lady, Terry really liked his sugar cookies and he always did what the kids did, went through them till he found the softest one,but he never broke 1.He would stop by before lunches if he saw Regina and I to ask how things were going because he knew things we're up and down back there,he would tell us to hang in there.Terry will be missed and remembered by so many.My condolences and prayers to Susie and her family.
