Robert Earl Lee, born on March 1, 1949, in Chicago, IL, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2024, at the age of 75. He was the beloved oldest son of Lillian Anderson and was lovingly raised by his grandmother, Annie Durr.

Robert's early years were shaped by the vibrant community of Chicago, where he attended Wendell Phillips High School. An exceptional athlete, Robert excelled in wrestling, track, basketball and football, earning a scholarship to Iowa Central Community College. As a standout linebacker, his talents on the football field led him to the University of Northern Iowa, where he continued to shine and earned a degree in education. Robert furthered his academic journey with a master's degree in Physical Education for the Physically Challenged from Kansas State University.

Robert dedicated his professional life to the Kansas City, KS Public School District, where he taught physical education and coached football, basketball, and track & field at the high school level. His passion for sports extended beyond the school setting; he also coached soccer, swimming, and wheelchair basketball at the recreational level. He enjoyed playing competitive softball with long-time friends until he was almost 60. Additionally, Robert worked for the Kansas City, MO Parks & Recreation Department as a lifeguard and pool manager and as a stadium employee for the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium for many years.

For 36 years, Robert inspired generations of students, using his love for sports and fitness to instill values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.  He inspired countless young minds and hearts with his dedication, guidance, and positive spirit. His influence extended far beyond the classroom and playing fields, leaving a lasting legacy in the Kansas City community.

Robert was preceded in death by his siblings Harry Cornelius (Nellie) Hudson, Perrin Karl (PK) Anderson, and DeEdra Arnette (Dee Dee) Anderson. He is survived by his children, Krishna Lee (Jessica Rice) and Robert Lee, II (Beth Lee); his grandchildren, Mya, Blaise, Ryder, Annika, Parker, Raphael, and Pippa; fiancée/long-term partner Jacquelyn Jones and family; friend and mother of his children Ms. Kathleen Lee; sisters Annette Marie Anderson, Chicago, IL, and Yvette Dee Henderson (James Henderson), Chicago, IL; brother Albert Milton (Bae Bae) Anderson, Chicago, IL; sister-in-law Edie Anderson, Los Angeles, CA and many nieces and nephews.

My heartfelt condolences on your loss. I knew Lee when we were about 15 years old. The four years after that was a wonderful friendship. Robert Lee was a great teammate and an even better friend. Even though we all grew up under challenging conditions Lee always exemplified high character and leadership as one of the captains of the football team. Although I have not seen him for many years I feel a great sense of loss. His friends and family are better because he was a part of their lives. God bless you all.

I remember Coach Lee as the gym teacher at Arrowhead Middle School. A great teacher and all around person. RIP

Former Student ,Kansas City ,Kansas

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Coach Lee. I first met Coach Lee at Arrowhead Middle School where he was my P.E. Teacher and later my Coach in football and basketball. More than a Coach, Mr. Lee was a trusted person I could talk to as a young man. The lessons he taught me have shaped me to be the man I am today. One of the first things he ever said at one of my first football practices was “always make sure you are making the right choices and doing the right thing, you never know who is watching. “ To this day I share these words with my own kids. In time our relationship grew from teacher - student, to friends. I would still talk to Coach as I finished college up until I moved away from KC. He will be missed but, I know he is resting well. My deepest and heartfelt condolences go to his family.
