Michael Robert Carey 79, of Westwood Hills, KS, dies Saturday April 25, 2026 at home after a year and a half long battle of pancreatic cancer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials, American Cancer Society or Guardian Angels Parish.
Michael was born April 8, 1947 in Kansas City, Missouri. He lived in Toronto, Canada from 1954-1959 as a child, where he learned to play hockey. He attended Kansas University and UMKC. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War from 1969-1972. He was in the restaurant business and owned Dixon’s Chili for 3 years. He also worked for Ge and AAA. He was an avid golfer and started playing at the age of nine until the age of 79. He was a KU and Chiefs fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lether M. Carey in 1983 and Robert E. Carey in 2007. He is survived by his daughters, Michelle Alverson of Gilbert, AZ, Megan Carey of Overland Park, KS, grandson Caleb Alverson of Gilbert, AZ and half-brother Robert Carey of Lawerence, KS.
A visitation will be Monday, May 4th at 5:00 pm till 7:00 pm at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS. A funeral mass will take place at 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 5th at Guardian Angels Parish located at 1310 Westport Road, Kansas City, MO. Burial will follow and take place at Graceland Cemetery in Burlington, Kansas at 2:00 pm.
