Aug 10, 1967---Mar 14, 2020

Michael Christopher Ernst, 52 of Overland Park, KS passed Saturday, March 14, 2020, in his home surrounded by family. Michael is survived by his loving wife of 30 years Lizabeth Ernst, Daughters: Hannah Ernst, Ellery Ernst and son, Caleb Ernst. He is also survived by his brother, Harold Ernst Jr, and wife, Caroline.  Michael is preceded in death by his mother, Roberta Ogle Ernst, father, Harold Ernst ,Sr, (surviving wife, Sherry, and children, Hayley and Gage), sister, Laura Campanini-Pape and step sister, Deidre Ernst.

Michael grew up in DeSoto, MO and attended St Rose of Lima Catholic school and St.Pius X Catholic High school. He went on to graduate Benedictine College with a B.A. in sociology and minor in psychology. Michael played for the Benedictine Raven football team. Upon graduation, Michael began his lifelong career with the Overland Park Police Department. While Michael held many positions with the Overland Park, Kansas Police Department, during his 29 year career, he retired his post in November 2019 after serving as the Deputy Chief of Police.  Michael was very involved with St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Parish in the following roles:  Christ Renews His Parish Program, Guardian Angels, Knights of Columbus, Lechter, Eucharistic Minister for the home bound, and was most proud to have served as the Department Liaison for the Police Chaplain Unit.  Michael was accepted into the Diaconate Class of 2019, but due to his illness was unable to participate.  Michael was an avid St. Louis Blues fan, St. Louis Cardinals fan, Lindenwood Hockey fan, and an exceptional "dance" dad. His unfaltering humility, compassion, and faith were felt by all who knew him. Today should be a day of thanksgiving knowing that he has gone home to meet the Lord.

In lieu of flowers please send donations to The Michael Ernst Memorial Fund, c/o Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, 1055 Broadway Blvd, Suite 130, KCMO 64105.

As you know, Michael was always safety minded in his life and in his work.  Because of this, he would want all of you to be safe and his family has decided to have a PRIVATE Mass on Wednesday at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Parish. The livestream of the Rosary and Funeral Mass beginning at 9:45 AM will be on this link.      https://www.facebook.com/Michael-Ernst-Funeral-103784114594504/

Dear Liz, Hannah, Ellery and Caleb, So many memories of Mike!!! The Mike Ernst smile and laugh are legendary and his saying, “That is so fruit.” And Mike and Liz constantly laughing with each other. Great memories of driving Mike to visit Liz at school! What an amazing man! We would go years without seeing you but then we would see you and it was just like old times. His love for Jesus and our Catholic faith were inspiring. I know Mike is celebrating with Jesus now. And all of you are missing him terribly. What a blessing for us to be his friend!!! With much love and great compassion, Claudio and Beth Ferraro

Benedictine Football Teammate ,Abingdon ,Maryland

My sincere condolences to your family. I first met Mike our freshman year (1985) at Benedictine College He was a super teammate and great guy to be around. He was a hard worker on the field and in the weight room. I still remember the week that he transferred from defensive linebacker to play center due to injuries on the offensive line. After about two practices he was smiling from ear to ear as he had played center in high school and was feeling great as the starting center. I still remember just before a play in practice that he turned around and told me how awesome it was to be playing center and the good guys like Greg Slade and Bill Evers on the offensive line as well. Mike was resilient, our freshman class had 72 freshmen football players. After four years of hard work and dedication to football and tougher classes, only 8 of us walked together across the graduation stand in May 1989. Mike, thank you for your many years of service to the people of Overland Park. God bless and Rest in Peace Brother.

Dear Liz and Family, God’s grace and peace to you today and always. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Michael. He was a great boss, a wonderful friend and we shared many laughs together. I admired his faithfulness to God and his love of family. I looked forward to hearing about you and his “proud papa” stories about the kids. I experienced him as strong, courageous, intelligent, funny, tenacious, fair, hard headed, compassionate, thoughtful, competitive and caring. I will miss him. RIP Brother Michael.

Mike was a big part of my CRHP experience - offering so much of himself personally and through a letter he wrote each of us. I was in the team that followed his so he and team put the retreat on for us. I didn't know him well, but many of my friends did and everyone had great admiration of him.

Christopher Corley Mar 19, 2020

CHRP Brother ,Overland Park ,Kansas

Ernst Family, I cannot begin to express how sorry I am for your loss. Mike was a CHRP Brother of mine on Team 4. I was the second youngest man in the group and was discerned to be Lay Director. I couldn't understand and didn't know why I was discerned as such, but Mike always reassured me and supported me. Almost every week I would say "Commish" (my nickname for him, short for "Commissioner") you should be Lay Director. You would be so mush better at this than me." And he would always laugh and say, "Chris, better you than me! God has a plan here." Hearing him say that always gave me the confidence to move forward like some sort of unprepared Peter. Mike was always the most respected and loved member of our team. Ask any of them. To a man, they will tell you that he was our real leader. Our rock. Our inspiration. One of the best humans we have ever met. I lost touch with Mike after CRHP but I prayed for him every day. And I know that he was praying for me. I never got to say goodbye to my friend. And I hate that. But I have a way that I see him in my mind: Strong. Towering above me, but with the warm, welcoming smile of a big brother. That is how I will always remember him. God grant you and your family comfort. Chris Corley
