Matthew Jon Watkins, 50, of Merriam, Kansas, passed away on March 7th, 2025, at his home. He was born on May 19th, 1974, in Denison, Iowa to Myron Eugene Watkins, who preceded him in death, and Donna Jane Watkins of De Soto, Kansas.
Matthew graduated from Dowling Catholic High School in Des Moines, Iowa and later attended and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He obtained his graduate degree from Creighton Law School in Omaha, Nebraska and completed his Doctorate. Matthew remained a loyal fan to the Iowa Hawkeyes, with a collection of memorabilia and attending games regularly. Matthew’s current position resided with Forest T Jones as their Senior Compliance Counsel/AML Officer.
Matthew was an avid sports fan, cheering passionately for the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, and Iowa Hawkeyes, never missing a chance to support his favorite teams. He also found joy on the golf course, in the pages of a good book, and through his love of music, which brought him comfort and connection throughout his life. Matthew founded The Annual Watty Open, the family golf tournament, in memory of his father in 2023. One of Matthew’s favorite pastimes was watching crime shows and documentaries.
Matthew was a kind and loving soul who cherished every moment spent with his family and friends. Whether sharing laughter with his children, making memories with his mother and siblings, or showing endless love and support to his nieces and nephews, he unfailingly put family first. He always loved entertaining and hosting family events, with Thanksgiving being his favorite. His warmth, generosity, and unwavering kindness touched everyone who knew him, leaving behind a legacy of love that will be cherished forever.
Matthew is survived by his two children, Aidan Matthew Watkins and Margaret Katherine Watkins, along with his mother Donna Jane Watkins, and four siblings: Jill Marie (Jack) Conard, Brenda Diane (Michael) Parezo, Patrick Myron (Pamela) Watkins, and Mary Beth (David) Thompson, in addition to several nieces and nephews.
Matthew’s time with us was far too short, but the love, laughter, and kindness he shared will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to be part of his life. We love you Matty.
