It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Marie Kolenda Lumley, who passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at the age of 45.
Marie was a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished daughter, sister, aunt, and friend whose greatest joy in life was her family. Her kindness, unwavering love, and generous spirit touched everyone who knew her, and her legacy will live on through the countless lives she impacted.
Marie was preceded in death by her father, Henry James Kolenda, and her mother-in-law, Carolyn Lee Lumley.
She is survived by her loving husband, Keith Lumley, and their three beloved children, Stella (14), Lily (12), and Stanley (10), who were the center of her world. She is also survived by her mother, Betty Jean Kolenda; her siblings, Matt (Angie), Cathy (Russ), Jackie (Dave), Kim (Bob), Paul, and Molly (Phil); along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever treasure her memory.
There are few words that can truly capture the depth of Marie's love for her family. She devoted her life to raising her children, rarely missing a game, practice, or milestone. Whether she was cheering from the sidelines, offering encouragement, or simply creating a loving home, Marie's greatest purpose and happiness came from being a wife and mother. She was the heart of her family, always putting the needs of others before her own.
Marie's faith and love of sports were established early in life. She attended All Saints Catholic School from kindergarten through eighth grade before continuing her education at Bishop Miege High School, where she graduated with the Class of 1999. She went on to play collegiate softball at Highland Community College before transferring to Kansas State University, where she earned her bachelor's degree in Business.
Following college, Marie proudly worked in her family's business at Sophie's Deli, where she formed lasting relationships with customers and coworkers alike. She later continued her career in the restaurant and hospitality industry at Danny's Bar & Grill and Johnnie's West before beginning her professional career with H&R Block.
Marie will be remembered for her infectious smile, quick wit, generous heart, and unwavering devotion to those she loved. She had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome, cared for, and valued. While her passing leaves an immeasurable void, the love she gave so freely and the memories she created will remain with her family and friends forever.
The family asks that those who knew and loved Marie honor her memory by embracing the people they love, supporting one another, and living with the same compassion, strength, and generosity that she shared every day.
The visitation will be from 8:30-10:15 a.m. with the Rosary being prayed at 10:15 a.m. and the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 10 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 5250 Mission Rd., Roeland Park, KS.
