Lawrence E. Ishum, Jr. peacefully died on June 6, 2020 at his home in Las Vegas Nevada.
Born in Kansas City, Kansas on February 7, 1940, Larry was the son of Lawrence E. Ishum, Sr and Clara (Strick) Ishum. He married Marcella (Luckett) Ishum, his wife of 51 years, on June 7, 1969.

Larry graduated from De LaSalle High School 1957 and the following year became Brother Lawrence Dominic in the congregation of Christian Brothers at Saint Mary’s College in Winona, MN.  Later, he earned the Master of Industrial Arts degree at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, KS and he became an independent insurance agent in the Kansas City area.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife Marcella (Marcy), daughter Laura Ishum-Ortiz and son-in-law Paul Ortiz, as well as sisters Constance Wilkinson, Carol Yurchak, Geraldine Ryan, and Mary Hall.

Larry was predeceased by his son David Ishum, sister Collette Hillman, his father Lawrence E. Ishum Sr. and mother Clara M. Strick.

People were most important in Larry’s life. His free time was spent with family and close friends, playing sports with his children, serving on the board of Cancer Action, attending Rotary functions, and expanding his religious beliefs with others.  He was proud to be an Eagle Scout and an avid athlete and handball enthusiast.

Larry rarely spoke of himself but was a selfless contributor to others making each person special, loved and respected.  He built life-long friendships and loved spending time with friends and family.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 1 pm, Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Las Vegas.   That will be followed in Shawnee Kansas with a 10:00 AM Visitation and 11:00 AM Mass Friday, June 19, 2020 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 12800 W. 75th St.

I have known the Ishams most of my adult life. They were members of my church in Shawnee, KS for years before moving to Las Vegas. I have known Marcy since I was 12 years old. I am nearly 62. Marcy came to my home after my baby sister was born when I turned 13. Larry was so kind to me always. He was always a gentleman. A gentle man. I have great memories happy and sad with the Ishams. I love this family. My prayers to Marcy, Laura and family. I wish I could be there with you. Know I am with you in prayer and in spirit. Pat Hayden

Marcy and Laura, Cathy and I were very sorry to hear that Larry had died. He was a genuinely fine person, and good friend, with a truly spiritual gift for making people feel better just being in his company. We're keeping you all in our prayers, praying especially that in spite of your loss you will find that blessed peace that passes all understanding.

Marcy and Laura, I was very sad to hear about Larry. He was truly one of the kindest men I have ever known. I will never forget the road trip he and I took to visit you, Laura, in Minnesota. I had way too much fun the night before we left. I was laid out in the back seat of the car the entire trip home the next day, and he was so patient and so kind to me the whole time. You are all in my thoughts. Love, Molly

John and I are so sorry to hear that Larry has passed. I have great memories of drafting class at Bishop Ward High my freshman year when I was the only girl in his drafting class. That is where I really got to know Larry as the most warm, gentle, caring and spiritually minded person I’ve ever met. My heartfelt condolences to the entire family. Marcy, I think so kindly of you also and wish you peace and happiness.
