Although retired officially, Johnny continued in a marketing/consultation role for Ace Polled Herefords – Millbrook, New York and Skiatook, Oklahoma; National Cattle Services – Elgin, Oklahoma; and numerous herds across the United States and Canada.  In 1996, he reduced his involvement in marketing Polled Herefords to Star Lake Cattle Ranch – Skiatook, Oklahoma until 2008 when he decided upon full retirement.

From the family at Tennessee River Music., Inc., Ft.Payne AL: What a fright it was to have Johnny as a friend, especially in the “ early Hereford “ days with sales and cattle shows etc. His presence at a cattle sale was the best!! Our family values were the same; love for cattle the same. Just great memories of Johnny we will have forever. “THANK GOD FOR HEAVEN CAUSE THAT’S WHERE WE ALL WANT TO BE”. Johnny beat us there !! Johnny was a very dear friend and special person. I knew him throughout my entire career breeding Herefords and I would describe him as the voice and greatest promoter of Herefords. Always there to help and promote Herefords. Great person! Lost a legend and great person! My prayers and condolences to Rose and family Donato D Ramos Laredo, Texas

APHA was my first job away from my home state. Johnny and Ed Bible definitely were great mentors for us young ones on how to live, work and treat others. I’m certain Johnny’s list of friends stretches to the moon and back. Sending hugs and prayers from our family. —Kim (Kanzler) Holt

So sorry to hear this. Johnny was a special guy in the "HEREFORD COMMUNITY". He knew all of us and never missed visiting with you at an event. I always admired how he would have his staff have EARLY breakfast together every morning before a show to go over details of the day. At some point he mailed me all the left over junior national shirts from the office, since one of our juniors got their display stolen from an exhibit board. He was a special guy. Rose, it was always good to see you at events when you came too. You never forget, but time helps heal. He is not suffering any more. Sue

Blessings for a wonderful wonderful person. Most of my fondest memories growing up showing Hereford cattle include Johnny. He always had encouraging words and a handshake or a pat in your back. Until we meet in the showring again! ❤️❤️

Johnny hired me right out of college to head to Oregon and travel for APHA. I asked him what I was going to do there. He said: only 3 things. -always do what you say you’ll do. - if you don’t know an answer-say I don’t know but I’ll find out. - if you always tell the truth you’ll never have to try to remember what you said. 30 years later I’m still following Johnny’s advice. Never a better mentor than Johnny Winston
