John T. McCoy, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 8, 2025. John was born the second of six brothers in Kansas City, Kansas on April 7, 1941, to Rolla B. and Dorothy McCoy. He grew up in Kansas City, KS graduating from Wyandotte High School in 1959.  John married his beloved wife, Claudette, on September 16, 1963. John and Claudette welcomed their only child, Patricia, in 1968.

John began his career working in sales for a manufacturer’s representative of BorgWarner. In 1974, John decided to branch out on his own and opened, McCoy Company.  With the help of his brothers, he built and diversified McCoy Company into a leading manufacturer of industrial acid waste plumbing systems known as Orion Fittings.

John was an avid tournament bowler from a young age, participating in tournaments across the country. This led him to start National Amateur Bowlers, Incorporated, a nationwide tournament club promoting amateur bowling tournaments in cities all over the country. At its height, NABI brought 2,500 amateur bowlers to Las Vegas every summer to compete for the club’s National Championship Title.

John and his brothers enjoyed spending time together watching horse racing.  As their love of the sport grew,  they decided to start Orion Stables to breed and race horses of their own.  Orion Stables’ thoroughbreds won many races at tracks across the Midwest, and gave John and all of his brothers and his great pride to watch them cross the finish line.

 Later, John became an avid golfer, he and Claudette traveling the country to play historic courses and enjoy their time together.    The best time in his life was the time he and Claudette spent doting on their three grandchildren, Bailey, Peyton and Barrett.  John and Claudette spent countless hours cheering on their grandchildren at horse shows and other sporting events, hosting weekend sleepovers at Grandma and Grandpas house, taking his grandson fishing, and traveling together on numerous family vacations.  There was always a twinkle in his eye when he and Claudette were with their grandkids.

John is survived by his beloved spouse, Claudette, their daughter Patricia and three grandchildren Bailey, Peyton and Barrett.   His parents, Rolla and Dorothy, and 5 brothers Jim, Billy, Joe, Richard and Patrick all predeceased him.

A Memorial Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia Lenexa, KS.
