It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the passing of Ian James McClelland, who left us far too soon on February 28, 2026, at the age of 24. Born in Overland Park, Kansas, Ian was a young man with the purest of hearts and a spirit that radiated warmth.
A Life of Growth and Kindness
Diagnosed with autism at age 15, Ian provided his family and friends with a unique perspective and outlook on the world—one defined by curiosity and genuine care. We are incredibly proud of the man he became and truly cannot imagine our lives without him.
Ian found great purpose and pride in his work as a grocery sacker at Price Chopper. It was more than a job; it was a wonderful growth experience where his "positive energy" and willingness to learn were felt by everyone around him. His manager shared:
"Ian was a great person... He seemed to always look at the good in people. Even though he was in our lives for just a short time, his positive personality impacted many people including me, and he will be missed."
Ian was a young man of deep passions. He possessed a profound love for art, finding peace and expression in creativity. He was an avid lover of anime characters and a dedicated fan of Pokémon video games, finding joy in the colorful worlds and stories they shared. Whether through his favorite series or a new game, Ian’s imagination and enthusiasm were a constant source of light.
A Heart for All Creatures
Ian’s love for animals was one of his most defining traits. He possessed a "pure heart" that animals recognized instantly, gravitating toward his calm and innocent energy. This bond was what made his time at PawsAbilities so meaningful; he didn’t just volunteer—he shared a genuine, reciprocal love with every animal he met, seeing the best in them just as he did in people.
A Heart for Others
Beyond his work, Ian was a dedicated student and volunteer at PawsAbilities in Olathe. He found joy in helping his friends and supporting a cause he truly believed in. He lived his life seeing the best in others, leaving behind a legacy of optimism that we hope to carry forward.
