Edith Marie (Hopfinger) Carey, Lee’s Summit, MO, passed away October 3, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Edith was born on a farm in Montrose, MO on April 5, 1933. She graduated from Lillis High School, Kansas City, MO in 1950. Edith married James Joseph Carey on June 14, 1958 and joined him while he was serving in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1957-1959. They loved traveling throughout Europe during Jim’s military service. Edith and Jim were lifelong Catholics. They lived in Kansas City, KS and were parishioners of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for 41 years. In 2001, they moved to Overland Park, KS and were parishioners of Church of the Ascension. Edith worked at Sears, Roebuck and Company from 1950-1958 and Kansas City Country Club from 1974-1996. Her pride and joy were her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She always had cross-stitched quilts or crocheted blankets, at the ready, lovingly made for gifts or donations. She loved entertaining, playing cards and cheering for the Chiefs, Royals and Kansas Jayhawks.
Edith was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, James, in 2016, her parents Ewald and Magdalene Hopfinger, an infant brother, her sister, Doris Mingucci (Arthur), sister-in-law, Jeanne Hopfinger, brother-in-law, David Carey (Patricia), sister-in-law, Laura McCully (John), and brother-in-law, Robert Eugene Carey.
Edith is survived by her brother, Frank Hopfinger (Barbara), sister-in-law, Millie Carey, brother-in-law, Ramey Carey (Kathy), and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She leaves behind her four children, Stephen Carey (Kelly), St. Louis, MO; Susan Haldeman (David), Ft. Myers, FL; Sharon Fanning (Scott), Shawnee, KS; and Shawn Carey (Diane), Holden, MO. She also leaves behind her nine grandchildren, Steffan Haldeman (Kristina), Joseph Carey (Emily Tonsfeldt), Jordan Haldeman (Danielle), Laura Carey, Jonathan Carey, Samuel Carey, Emily Crance (Andrew), Christa Gould (Kyle) and Matthew Fanning (Maggie). Edith also leaves behind nine great grandchildren, Skyla Haldeman, Liam Haldeman, Quinn Haldeman, Nova Haldeman, Leo Tonsfeldt, Will Tonsfeldt, Jude Haldeman, Greyson Gould and Isla Fanning.
