Doug was born in Salina, Kansas on August 9, 1947 to Dick and Lucille (Brinkman) Lumley. He grew up in Solomon, Kansas and graduated from Solomon High School. He played football for Solomon High School gorillas and routinely told exaggerated stories of his life as a great quarterback of the Solomon gorillas. He attended barber school in Topeka and began his barber career in Hutchinson, Kansas at the age of 18. He next barbered in Emporia and enlisted in the Army Reserves, where he was called to serve in Vietnam. After returning home from Vietnam, he continued his barber career in Emporia for the next 27 years. He owned two barber shops in Emporia before moving to Kansas City in 1993. He finished his last 25 year career at Barbers of Stanley Station, which he loved and loved his coworkers. He was a barber for a total of 52 years.
While in Emporia, he was a member of the Emporia Rotary Club, Emporia State's Hornet Club, and very involved with Sacred Heart School while his kids attended the school. He was an avid supporter of Emporia High football, Emporia State football and basketball. He loved bicycling on various trails around Kansas City. The most memorable was riding parts of the Katy Trail. His passion was being a season ticket holder with the KC Chiefs for more than 25 years. He loved sharing this experience with his son, Brian, and his two brothers Dan and David. The only thing he loved more than watching sports was babysitting his 3 grandsons, Mason, Mitch and Caden on Mondays. They were the light in his world.
