Donald L. Schick, 86, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on December 4, 2025, following a short battle with acute myeloid leukemia. He was born on December 11, 1938, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Leo and Lillian Schick (Bergerhofer).
Don graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1957, where he was a member of the marching band. He met the love of his life, Evelyn Shoemaker, at the local Mugs Up restaurant that same year. They were married on July 27, 1961 and raised two children during their 64 years of marriage.
Don worked at the family business, Country Produce, in Kansas City, Kansas until 1967. From 1967 to 2003, he worked as a meat cutter through the local union for several area grocery stores including A & P, United Super and Piggly Wiggly. After he retired, Don kept busy working for two local veterinarian offices caring for the animals. For those that knew his love of animals, this did not seem like a job.
Outside of work, Don loved to fish and many fond family memories were made at local lakes and creeks. Don also loved his 1965 Impala. Countless hours were spent polishing and cleaning every square inch. From 1976 into the 2000’s, many weekends were enjoyed at local car shows displaying his pride and joy.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Schick, of the home, his children: Valarie Harlan (Dan) and Mark Schick (Ruth), four grandchildren: Geoffrey Towns (Niki), Michaella Prather (Keaton), Mitchell Towns, Halie Schick, and one great-granddaughter: Diana Towns.
Services will be held at Porter Funeral Home, 1835 Minnesota Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas. The visitation will be Tuesday, December 9, 2025 from 4-6 PM. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 10, 2025 at 10 AM. A private family internment service will occur at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in Don’s memory to the local animal shelter of your choice.
