Dec 10, 1948---May 29, 2024

David Keith Jones passed away May 29, 2024, at the age of 75 in Kansas City, KS. He is survived by his wife, Laila Jones; his brothers, Don (Beverly) of Cañon City, CO and Tom (Linda) of Wichita Falls, TX; his son, Nicholas (Lee) of Overland Park, KS; and his beloved grandchildren, Maxine and Adam Jones.

David is preceded in death by his parents, George and Virginia Jones, of Cañon City, CO, and his sisters, Betty Begin and Carol Jones.

Born in Cleveland, OH, and raised in nearby Kirtland, David was the fourth of five children. As a young man, he enjoyed the outdoors, animals and sports, using his height as a competitive advantage throughout his time as a forward for the Kirtland Hornets high school basketball team. He went on to attend Parsons College in Fairfield, IA, where he majored is history and was a member of “Where the Boys Are,” an organization of young men with a shared loved of life and motorcycles. His passion for music also led him to Woodstock in 1969, forever a highlight of his college days.

After graduation, Dave returned to Cleveland where he traded his leathers and riding boots for dark suits and dress shoes as a salesman for IBM. A hard worker with excellent personal rapport, he repeatedly found himself part of the One Hundred Percent Club and enjoyed a series of promotions that led him into management. During this time, he was introduced to Laila Kalns, the love of his life, before taking a marketing promotion in Columbus in 1978. Laila joined him there upon their marriage in 1979, and the couple started their family in 1982.

Dave was introduced to Formula One racing by friends and business clients, which led him to attend more than 20 races across the United States and Canada throughout his life. A 42-year member of the Porsche Club of America, he raced his own 1974 Porsche 911 as a hobbyist and later showed Porsches he owned at various car shows and events across the Midwest, often coming home with trophies and ribbons.

Dave’s career with IBM continued to flourish and ended after 32 years of service to the company. Rather than retiring early, he decided to pursue his passion for performance automobiles as a salesman for Byers Imports, dealing primarily in Porsche and Jaguar sales, for the last four years of his professional career.

Following the birth of his first grandchild, Dave and Laila relocated to Shawnee, KS, in 2018 to be closer to family. He found great joy in volunteering for the Great Plains SPCA and following his grandchildren around the soccer pitch. Dave built deep camaraderie with members of his Rock Steady Boxing class and great relationships with fellow motorheads and neighbors in Kansas City before his passing.

A kind heart, gentle soul and great sense of humor turned Dave’s acquaintances into friends for life. Though he left us too soon, his glowing smile will never be forgotten.

A visitation will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 8 at Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS 66215, followed by a service at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinsons Foundation or Great Plains SPCA.

We are so very sorry to hear about David. He was such a great person in the boxing group at the J. The others always enjoyed having him in class and the caregivers had a great time visiting with Laila. We will miss those times for sure. What a loss, too soon.

To Dave’s Family: I send my deepest condolences. I was shocked to hear of his passing. Dave was from day one, the one I looked for. If I saw Dave and his warm open-hearted smile, I knew we were in this Parkinson’s fight together. I imagine he is yet dancing to some great rock and roll, May his memories be a constant blessing.

I met Dave three years ago when I started volunteering in the rocksteady boxing classes that he participated in. Always one of the most positive happy people I met there. Always with the smile, a chat, or a pat on the back. He was one of my favorite people that I saw each week, and I will truly miss seeing his smile at the classes. He and his wonderful Laila were a loving team and she took such good care of Dave. My heart is broken, Dave left us much too soon. But he sure left a mark during the time that he was here. Condolences to his family.

What a beautiful obituary for such a lovin’-life guy! I’m very proud to call him my uncle. He was my hero since almost 60 yrs. ago, when I was just a boy, and I’d see him with motorcycle tire track prints on the back of his T-shirt. He had no problem dirt bike racing against or with anyone! He is greatly missed. Love you, Uncle David!

Ahhh Dave what an inspiration you were! We met shortly after he and his wife moved to the Shawnee area. He was part of our Rock Steady Boxing family in Olathe. As the "new kid on the block", he fit right in. He had an openness about him that made you feel comfortable and a friend. He and his other fellow boxers, worked hard, supported each other, and he became an instant family member. My condolences to his lovely wife, son and those grandkids whom he loved dearly. God Bless!

To Dave's loving wife and family, We are sad to hear of Dave's passing, yet thankful to call him our friend. Several people have already talked about his smile, but it truly is what I looked forward to seeing. Dave had this little ornery smile! Dave and Mike were in RSB together, soon after moving here. We benefited from his willingness to share the triumphs and struggles of a parkinson's journey. May God give him everlasting peace and comfort to his family.

So many fond & fun memories of Uncle David. He always had a need for speedy and stylish cars and motorcycles. He would try to scare me as a young child giving me a lift home from grandma & grandpas by letting his car coast downhill as fast as it would go in neutral without touching the gas peddle and could always collect a wiggle or squeal for shock value. He was such a loyal, kind and generous father, son, husband, brother, uncle and friend. Someone to always look up to and now earned his heavenly wings. Peace be with you.

I first met David and Laila 3 years ago when I joined the Rock Steady boxing classes at the Jewish Community Center. We all shared struggles with Parkinson’s disease and we developed friendships that grew to become a support group. Tall David could really punch our hanging punching bag harder than most. He remembered names and was quick to share greetings and smiles. Laila and David made a wonderful team and cared deeply for one another. As I reviewed his obituary I learned many important facts about who this special person was and it saddened me all the more that our friendship had to end so abruptly. His loss is felt viscerally by so many friends and family.

Dave was just the best. DK was a great friend and mentor to me at IBM and life when I was just getting started. He introduced me to Victory's, which was life changing. Like many I suppose, Dave was my goto forever on all things automotive. Nicked named Super Dave and Fuji by our favorite customer we had a great time working together as well. I learned a good deal in the process. A special person and I am very grateful for having his friendship. I think of him whenever I see a Moto Guzzi! Regards, Clark

Our thoughts and prayers are with Laila and other family members at this difficult and sad time. So many wonderful comments have been made about David and we too were blessed to call him a special friend. At one of the RSB Chat sessions, we mentioned hosting a family event patterned after Woodstock. What a surprise when David said he actually went to Woodstock. Wow! We were from a small rural community in the Midwest and he was the first and only person we've known to be there. The stories he could tell ......! His smile, the twinkling eyes, the firm handshake and a little wave each time he headed out the door at The J will be memories of David we continue to hold dear. We send love to all. Wil and Joy

Nick and Laila, my condolences to your family during this difficult time. Though it had been years since I saw him, Mr. Jones' face is one that instantly brings back memories of our time growing up in Gahanna, going to volleyball practices and games, and hanging at your house and the Weston's next door.
