It is with great sadness that the family of Kirk A Spikes announce his passing on Monday, September 9, 2024, at the age of 69.
Kirk was born to Warren Spikes and Joan Spikes (McIlrath) in Hugoton, KS on August 6, 1955. He graduated from Hugoton High School in 1973. Growing up he helped out on his father’s farm and his grandma and grandpa McIlrath’s farm. There he learned how to work hard but have fun doing it. His mother first instilled his love of fishing and camping. In school, he developed a passion for playing the trumpet, which took him to Fort Hays State, where he met his wife, Kay Schippers.
Kirk and Kay were married on August 7, 1976. Soon after graduating from Fort Hays with a bachelor’s in business, the couple returned to Hugoton where they raised their three children, Leslie, Kyle, and Amanda. He loved being a father and took immense pride in providing for his family. He and Kay were the foundation for the success their three children have achieved. In 2008, they moved to Olathe to be closer to their children and grandchildren, but Kirk was steadfast on return trips to Hugoton for his parents. As a “Papa” he spoiled his two granddaughters and was the first to teach them how to play catch. He and Kay loved taking them on outings to the zoo, the Royals games, and other fun activities. In 2020, Kirk relocated to Holiday Island, AR, close to the White River where he could take his boat out to fish. Throughout life, Kirk enjoyed flying propeller planes, dancing the Jitterbug, fishing, hunting, grilling, and watching KU basketball. He loved these things even more when he could share them with friends and family.
Kirk suffered from chronic rheumatologic disease and depression for many years, but he persevered through it and drew considerable strength from the love of his family, working closely with his father and siblings, and his community.
He is survived by his wife, Kay Spikes, daughter, Leslie (Dave) and their two daughters, Emory and Eden Naylor, Leawood, KS, his son, Kyle, Austin, TX and daughter, Amanda, Chicago, IL, his three siblings Toby Spikes, Steamboat Springs, CO, Scott Spikes (Teresa) Hugoton, KS, and Ann Spikes, Wichita, KS, his mother-in-law, Armella Schippers, Olathe, KS and numerous nieces and nephews.
Kirk was preceded in death by both of his parents, Joan and Warren Spikes, and his father-in-law, John F. Schippers.
