Oct 28, 1951---Jan 24, 2023

Lydia Marie Costello Dreher passed away at home January 24, 2023 after a long, courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Lydia was born October 28, 1951 to Victor and Phyllis Costello in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. She was the oldest and bossiest of their four children. During childhood Lydia discovered a love of being outside, the value of hard work, and a “git-er-dun” mindset.

In 1973, Lydia graduated with a degree in Business Administration from University of Kansas, where she was an active member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. At KU she was intrigued by a man named David Dreher. They were married March 6, 1976. Their mutual generosity, honesty, and grand energy powered them through 46 years of a vibrant and united marriage.

Lydia was not a traditional bake cookies and kiss boo-boos kind of mother. She raised her children, Adrienne, Paul, and Conor to have moral integrity, pay attention to detail, be independent, and speak up for the underdog. She was a stickler for doing things the right way. Even though she held her children to a high standard, she ruled with a dose of fun. She was the first mom to jump in the water, dress in costume, or use colorful language with perfect execution.

The combination of Lydia’s big personality and honest appraisal of situations was a magnet that attracted others. She had a knack for keeping up with people, especially being present to support them through tough times. Lydia knew how to lovingly tell her comrades to suck it up when needed and delighted in coining nicknames for loved ones.

Lydia was a woman of deep faith, and her trust in God brought her peace. She was a devoted member of Saint Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church in Mission, Kansas. She founded a bible study aptly named “The YaYas,” and turned her passion for music into a praise and worship band called “The Winds of Harmony.” In 2004, Lydia and David purchased a cabin in Cuchara, Colorado where she spent countless hours outdoors exploring God’s creation.

Lydia’s love, bossiness, and “can do” attitude will be dearly missed. Her orneriness, faith, and strength will carry on for generations to come. There’s a little bit of Lydia in all of us.

Lydia is survived by her beloved husband, David Dreher, daughter Adrienne “A” Benson (Ryan), son Paul “Paulie-Wog” Dreher (Megan), and son Conor “ConMan/Connie” Dreher. Just days before her death she met her newest grandbaby Dane Costello Dreher as well as reminded the grandsons she helped raise Tommy (16) and Hank (13) Lisenby “not to get in any trouble.” She is also survived by her sister Alice Costello, brother Richard Costello (Donna), and David’s siblings whom she spent her life alongside: Sam Dreher (Linda), Ann Richardson (Steve), and Carody Wise (Dr. Jim). Other survivors include her best friend Betty O’Neill and bonus grandchild Davis Benson. She had many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins she was close to, along with a multitude of dear friends and her adored dogs.

She is preceded in death by her brother Mark Costello, her parents, Victor and Phyllis Costello, and her parents in-law Dr. Henry and Betty Dreher. In lieu of flowers, Lydia asked before her departure friends and family consider contributing to one of the three causes she held near to her:

My heartfelt condolences to your family. It is very apparent after reading the obituary what a glowing and loving person Lydia was. It is obvious that her life was spent letting others know how a life lived surrounded by family is filled with fun, boundaries, and achievable goals. Her Obituary was a beautiful tribute. I pray you will be comforted in knowing that the life she lived left a beautiful glowing light for her loved ones to follow.

I have known this day was coming for some time now, but it is hard to realize I cannot have another talk with Lydia, I last spoke to her from the hospital 10 days ago. Though I have known Lydia since freshman year in college, we became closer the last 10-15 years as the kids were grown. She called me "Goodie Two Shoes", though I wasn't. I loved seeing her whenever I came back to KC and loved our sojourns to Cuchara. I have so many good memories of college parties with Lydia, with Pi Phi's and the Betas in particular. and cherish the deep and fun conversations we have had in more recent times. She is the epitome of courage. I recall some sessions where we had colorful words together directed at the cancer demon. I am a better person for having known her. I am so very sad I will not be able to attend the funeral, as I am leaving for my son's wedding at 4am on the 1st of Feb from Milwaukee. Much love and comfort to the Dreher and Costello families and her many close friends.

David, Adrienne, Paul, Conor and family, I remember the first time met Lydia at the Evergreen Dreher cabin. I was a "little girl" and I was fascinated with her spunk, spice and yes, her perfectly executed colorful language. I was a fan from day one. Over the past several months, Lydia and I were able to connect in a new way and I will cherish our texts and her strength and her "still kickin' and bitchin'." What I will admire and remember most is what she shared with me via text only recently in that she was going to love on that new baby and then she was ready to go. She had the fight and perseverance through all these years to fight and love her family while also having the grace to know when she would be ready. She wasn't kidding and she definitely had a plan with God on how this would happen. She also always thought of others, including myself and my family and referred to what we had gone through with our dad not too long ago. I will always appreciate my spicy, fun cousin who I knew was one of my "people" from the moment I met her. . The loss for you all is immense and I KNOW that she leaves a legacy that will travel into all the generations. I know she has an imprint on me always. Love and blessings, Tracy

I first met Lydia back in the 1970s up at KU. David Dreher, who I had been friends with since 1964 when my family moved to Salina wanted me to meet them at a Lawrence watering hole called the Stables. I thought his request was a little strange since he was usually busy with ATO fraternity business. I sat down at their table and David made the proper introductions. It was a nice but fairly quiet get together since I wasn't loquacious by nature when meeting someone for the first time and it appeared to me that Lydia fit the same bill. How very wrong I was going to be with my initial evaluation. David, as usual, carried the brunt of the conversation. Time carried on in their relationship. There were a few dust ups from to time but I knew something was up when he started introducing Lydia to our Salina group of close knit friends. In fact, David was the first of us to pop the question. Their was an old song from the 1930s called "Wedding Bells are breaking up that old gang of mine." While true, no mistake about it., all of us were very happy for David and Lydia's upcoming nuptial bliss. So happy that we wanted to share in it by organizing a road trip down to Bartlesville, Oklahoma to share in the festivities. All I can share about it, Lydia's parents made a mistake by holding the reception at their house. It was a night to remember. Slowly by surely, Lydia began to forgive us and let bygones be bygones. It was in this time period that I realized how wrong I was in my initial evaluation of Lydia at the Stables. She was very loquacious when asked to voice her opinion about anything. More importantly, she was one of the most honest people I have ever met. If you asked for her opinion or advice on something that has been bugging you, get ready for your face to turn beet red. In Lydia's world, she lived by the truth will set you free philosophy. A case in point, when Susan and I, who grew up in Wichita, announced our engagement 43 years, Lydia made a special point to corner her at one of the showers for a 10 minute introduction. I was starting to get nervous. When the powwow was over, Susan slowly walked toward me. The first words that came out my mouth were "I can explain Honey. What did Lydia say?" Susan replied. "We just got to know each other. I really like her. The most important thing that she said was that you were one of the good ones." After, I wiped my brow, I look across the room to where Lydia was standing. She gave me a big wink. We became good friends that night. I have been sending out Christmas CDs to family and friends for a long now. Some may say that I have been sending them out too long. I asked a friend at work who reminded me of Lydia several months before I retired whether or not I should continue to make them. I knew she would give me her honest opinion. I told her that I didn't know if these people actually played them or just used them as coasters. She said to not send any out for a year and see if anyone complained. The only person who ever took time to thank me was Lydia. This started shortly after she was given the news that a vicious foe had invaded her body. She opened the thank you note by saying, "Well, Omar (nickname) you really knocked this one out of the park." My eyes started to well up as I thought, with all that she is facing, she took time to say thanks to me. That was Lydia. As I continued making Christmas CDs. Lydia, started giving me advice on spiritual groups she had been listening to and seeing in concert around the Kansas City area. I always included songs each year from those groups and she always sent me a thank you note updating me on her world. I can't be sure of this but if Lydia can figure out a way, there is a good chance I will be receiving a short note next December on how to make my CDs a little better. God Bless you Lydia Omar

Days have passed and still Lydia lingers on my mind. Her courage and determination are something I admired about her. What an authentic friend, who told it like it was with no holds barred. I miss her and only regret the years we loss contact. I’m thankful we were able to reconnect. Her love for others just poured out to all she met. Dear David, A, Paul, & Conner, We only recently heard of Lydia's passing and are so very sorry for your loss. Lydia was an amazing woman. I always loved being with her when you kids were younger. She was so high energy and such a strong woman of faith. The obituary is beautifully written. David, you did an incredible job at the funeral service of truly capturing Lydia's personality. When I think of Lydia, I think of her smile and her classic way of cutting to the bottom line. The world is a less colorful place without her being here with us. Our love & prayers are with all of you at this time. Love, from all the Hydeman Clan
