Aug 19, 1938---Jan 14, 2023

Robert Eltinge “Bob” Hodgdon went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday January 14th, 2023. Bob was born in Kansas City, Kansas on August 19, 1938 to Bruce and Amy Hodgdon. Bob grew up in suburban Kansas City and was extremely active in his hometown community. He attended Baker University in Baldwin City, KS before graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of Kansas in 1961. Bob also served in the United States Air Force and the Air Force Reserves from 1957-1961.

Bob was a loving father to four – Chris (Adele) Hodgdon, Heidi (Erwin) Rodriguez, Stacie Larimore (Bryant) and Alisa Hodgdon – and he was grandfather of 11 and great-grandfather to 8.

Bob’s personal and professional life was intertwined with the Hodgdon Powder Company his parents founded in 1947. From his earliest age, Bob and his brother J.B. were instrumental to company operations – Bob often told the story of weighing and loading gun powder into retail bags in the family basement.  Throughout his 70+ year career, Bob served in multiple positions at the company, but notably served as President from 1976-1997 and Board Chairman 2014-2017. He was voted as Board Chairman Emeritus in 2017.

He also assisted with the design and lead the team constructing the Pyrodex Plant in Herington, Kansas in 1979 and helped to design and build The Bullet Hole, a 44-station indoor shooting range in 1967.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Bob consistently invested his time and finances into his community. He served as volunteer to many civic organizations, such as Volunteers in Prison, Christian Sportsmen’s Fellowship, Cross International, Pastor Serve and the National Christian Foundation. Bob was also a member of the Westside Family Church in Lenexa, Kansas, where he served on the Pastor Advisory Team and leader of Divorce Care and Crown classes.  An important note, over his lifetime he supported nearly 450 ministries and community organizations with his time, talents and most definitely his treasures.

Along with his work at the Hodgdon Powder Company, Bob was very active in the Hunting and Shooting industry. He served as board member for the National Rifle Association, a board member and trustee of the NRA Foundation, a founding member of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a member of the Kansas State Rifle Association and a founding member of the Kansas Sportsmen’s Alliance.

Bob was kind, generous and passionate about the causes he believed in and was devoted to. His leadership of the Hodgdon Powder Company, through some very difficult transitions, resulted in the company achieving a level of success that could not have been imagined by the previous generation. Many people benefited from Bob’s good works over the course of his lifetime, and he will be missed.

Visitation will be from 4-7:00 PM Friday, January 20, 2023 at Westside Family Church, 8500 Woodsonia Drive, Lenexa, KS.  Funeral Services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, January 21, 2023 at Westside Family Church with burial following at Old Monticello Cemetery in Shawnee, KS.  Memorial contributions may be made to Westside Family Church or National Shooting Sports Foundation

Bob was a true friend. You say you can tell a great man by how he treats a little man. Bob was a great man. He never let his success in this world take away from his calling to follow Jesus to love and serve others. Bob and I would meet for coffee and he always had great wisdom to impart along with the kindest eyes. I could see Jesus in Bob’s eyes. The last time we were able to meet Bob new it wouldn’t be long before He left this world. I asked Him how I could pray for Him. He said pray I can finish strong and all of my family and friends would come to know Jesus. Bob loved strawberry shakes from Chic A Filet and I’ll never forget His parting smile and generous heart for Jesus! Well done You good and faithful servant Bob! Jesus heard heard your prayer! You were dearly loved and will be missed! May the Lord comfort your family and all of them grieve in healthy ways in the days ahead. May the Lord’s peace and love fill you and surround you like never before.

I am confident that the two of you carefully looked out for one another your whole lives through. As a person of Faith, I am confident you will reunite one day, in your Father's arms. Angella & I are praying for you and Miss Anne in this season. Love to your family. Troy

He's not suffering at all, he is where he has wanted to be since being born again more than 40 years ago. Thanks Chris for keeping me in the light as your dad progressed towards the ultimate goal of a genuine CHRIST LOVING PERSON. I am deeply humbled and massively honoured. GOD BLESS YOU ALL. Chris and Family, Losing anyone is difficult...losing a parent leaves an empty space in our hearts. As time passes, fill that space with the loving memories made during a full lifetime. He had a full life, a loving family, successes and even regrets...but he is remembered by many and that memory is a rich legacy. Be well and God bless.

Very sad to hear of Bob's passing. He was a dear friend to me and my family. I've known Bob for over 40 years, and was blessed to have him with us in the wake of my father's death in 2005. Bob's encouragement, support, and sound advice, has helped me navigate the often treacherous, business and political waters I've encountered over the past 18 years. I had just been thinking about calling him to ask his advice on a difficult decision, when Chris called me with the sad news. But with the sadness, there is rejoicing, as Bob has gone on to his promised reward. He was an excellent example of what a Christian man is supposed to be; kind, generous, honest, loving, and fully comfortable in his faith and commitment. He was a good man and a good friend. I will miss his counsel, and join with his family in mourning his passing and celebrating his life. I know, as they do, that he has returned to the Father through the grace of Jesus Christ, and that we will one day be reunited. Thank you Bob. Until we meet again.

Bob was a friend I never met. Bob was a generous partner with my organization, Corporate Chaplains of America. He and I had scheduled a meeting last fall, but on the way to the airport, I became ill, and diverted to the ER. When I called Bob to explain and reschedule, he was so concerned about me. He even texted me a few days later to check on how I was doing. We were planning to visit in February. I'm grateful for my friend Bob and pray for the entire family. May God Himself comfort each and every one mourning the loss of a truly amazing man. Hebrews 6:10, m.

Fortunate is the person who some time during his life meets someone who has dedicated a life to helping and serving others. Bob was one of those rare people who care so much about those around them that they seem to ignore their own needs, and use all of their time, energy, caring and treasure as they help those in need. Bob dedicated his life to so many causes and individuals. I had the privilege of working with him in providing for a severely disabled child who belonged to friends who had passed away. Bob was devoted to seeing that he received the best possible care. And Bob's family follows in his service to others, as they now assume that role. Bless them. Rest well, Bob, in the hands of Jesus.
