Sep 05, 1936---Nov 23, 2022

Maurice E. Bock, 86, of Overland Park, KS, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2022.  Visitation will be from 10-11:00 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 30, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 11300 W. 103rd Street, Overland Park, KS. Private family burial at Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, KS.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Scholastica Monastery in Fort Smith, AR or Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Maurice was born September 5, 1936, in Pilot Grove,  MO and was one of eight children born to Emil and Catherine Bock. He went to Barber College and started Bock's Hairstyling with his brothers Gerry & Jim. Their first barbershop was at Main and Gregory and they eventually opened four locations in Overland Park.  He was a barber for over sixty years and it's been said he was also part psychologist, minister, movie critic and matchmaker.    He was still working at Bock's Hairstyling at Corporate Woods until the Covid pandemic hit forcing him to make the decision to retire.

For those that knew him, we will always remember his famous prose that he would recite which were, “Go with the flow like a tiny twig on the shoulders of a mighty stream” or “Be not angry at the winter wind that blows away the rose, rather go quickly to pick the rose before it blows...there is a message there...do today what you can do today and do not wait for tomorrow”.  But the most infamous saying as he leaves a room is “I’ll be Bock”.  He had ears that listened (a great asset as a barber) and never missed any conversations, especially when someone would whisper, then his ears became super sonic.

Maurice was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Gerald Bock and Margie Kramer.  Maurice is survived by his children Janet and her husband Gary Pennington, Chris Bock, stepdaughter Terre Gruetze, grandchildren Jenna and Garrett Pennington, Cole and Jesse Bock, Drake, Dalton and Marissa Gruetze, brother Jim (Dorothy) Bock,  sisters Dorothy Valentine, Sr. Barbara Bock, OSB, Bernice (Marcus) Evers, Judy (Glen) Bock-Brinley and many extended family and friends.

Maurice was devoted to his faith in Jesus, had a heart of gold and truly enjoyed helping others.  He enjoyed singing for several years in the choir at Queen of the Holy Rosary-Wea in Bucyrus, KS. He loved dancing, fishing, shooting countless games of pool at his home with family, watching Turner Classic Movies in his recliner and was an avid Kansas City sports fan (mostly a KC Royals fan).  Taking off work was a foreign concept to him but tried to never miss his son’s baseball games.  He was quite a storyteller to many.  As a passionate and proud grandpa to his grandchildren, he loved watching baseball games with a hamburger or hotdog and french fries in hand and taking in choir programs throughout the years.  A special thank you to all of his loyal friends and customers at Bock’s Hairstyling and the care he recieved at Brookdale Overland Park and Hospice.

My heartfelt condolences for all who lost Maurice. Myself included. I’m so grateful for all the wonderful memories and for the chance to clean him up near the end (hair) 😉and hold his hands and sing gospel songs to him. It seemed to bring him peace. Thank you Janet for letting me know. May his beautiful soul rest in heavenly peace…or get the party going up there😉🙏🏼♥️. Mindy

I will never forget the kindness Maurice showed me when he hired me at Bock’s Hairstyling in 1988, fresh out of cosmetology school. I worked hard for him but it took some mentoring and some time from him, Steve, Jay, Lynette and Terre before I really earned the title of hairstylist. He was patient with me and gave me an opportunity when many others could have done the job from day 1. I was so blessed to receive an opportunity from him and will forever be appreciative of the opportunity given to a newly graduated 19 year old from southern Missouri. I would not be where I am today without his belief that I could make it in the business. It was an honor to know and love him. Glad God is giving him the rest he truly deserves. May God grant peace and comfort to his entire family and many friends at this sad time. Love, one of his favorite employees, Lisa

RIP uncle Maurice hope you and dad are having some great conversations up there and sharing some corny jokes. Thanks for being a great business partner to my dad and all the generous “loans” you gave our family. I will always remember all the family meals with you. My mom loved to feed you and your famous phrase “You got a do on(any food or dessert) that” has been passed on to the next generation. We’ll done uncle MO!

Maurice and I became friends when his shop opened in Corporate Woods. Both being single, Maurice suggested that we go out on a Friday night to hit the local dance venues where he was my "wingman". That became a weekly event until late September 1983 when he said he'd promised a group of ladies that he'd meet them at Gatsby's in the Glenwood Manor. When we arrived, one lady in particular caught my eye and as Maurice would say, "he didn't see much of me for the rest of the evening". With Maurice as my best man, Jody became my wife 1984. During my visits at Brookdale, we'd reminisce about our old cars, our Mustangs, and laugh about our Friday night adventures. I'll treasure those times and having know Maurice as a wonderful friend. I moved to the area in 2001. Thank goodness my new office was in Corporate Woods as that location led me to wandering into Bock's in search of a barber. And, to my great fortune I met Maurice. I loved knowing Maurice and hearing about his family & business history. And, I shared with him my small town upbringing and travel adventures. I had such great confidence in Maurice I brought my 2 year old (at the time) grandson into him. Maurice handled it so well, my grandson never moved and never made a peep while getting his haircut... even when it was his first visit. I was seriously impressed. God Bless You Maurice and Thank You!!

Maurice! What a fantastic person he was. Cousin Maurice. So funny, so kind, such a gentleman. He was always available to escort his unattached female relatives to events, never let us feel left out. I remember him taking my mom out and being her dance partner many times. And what a smooth dancer he was. He was so good to her, a loyal friend and companion. When mom was dying, he called to check on her many times. As ill as he was, he still looked after her. I will miss him.

Anyone entering through the front door got to meet Maurice, he would always had something to say 🤗 May the Lord be with all Maurice's family and friends! I have been blessed by all the wonderful people I've worked with and customers I've had at Bock's! Praise be to the Lord!!! ❤️

Janet & family, I'm sorry you lost your loved one. He lived a life of caring and listening to others and enjoyed his grandchildren. "Death leaves a hurt no one can heal, But love leaves memories no one can steal."

My condolences to Maurice’s family. I was a customer of Maurice’s for over 50 years. He first cut my hair when I was 16 and continued to cut it until I was 69 and Covid hit. He gave my son his first haircut for his first birthday and he is now 35. I have many good memories of sitting in his chair and listening to several minutes of conversation for every snip of the scissors. He was a good man, father, and friend to many. He will be missed.

I remember getting my first haircut at Bock's Barbershop in Overland Park KS. Gerry had the honors but guess who did all the talking? I remember later thinking, does Gerry get his turn to say something? What a fantastic human being. Maurice really touched so many lives. He was a master at making people feel welcome. He looked out for my mom and we will never forget that. The world is a bit more quiet, without all those funny stories. We sure miss you Maurice. ..

My sincere condolences to Maurice’s extended family and his many friends. I began having my hair cut at the Bock’s in Metcalf South Shopping Center by Jim when I was 12-years-old after my family moved in 1968 to Overland Park and from about age 22 until I retired to the south in 2018 was a devoted customer of Maurice at the College Blvd shop. Even when I didn’t have a haircut appt, I would sometimes get a cup of coffee at the shop a few doors down and sit in Bock’s to drink it while listening to Gerry, Bernie, and Steve exchange their analyses of the Royals, the Chiefs, various movies and tv shows, and all things Kansas City. I remember fondly Maurice’s excitement in 2015 over the World Series title after the team - finally, at long-last - followed the strategy and player-personnel moves he had been recommending for years! With Jim retired and Maurice and Gerry now reunited, it’s truly the end of an era for the barber business in Kansas City.

I’m so sorry to hear of Maurice’s passing. He was such a kind person and always love conversations with him. He sang at my wedding at Queen of the Holy Rosary Wea 31 years ago. He had such a beautiful voice. I had not seen Maurice in years but will always have found memories. Sending prayers to Janet, Chris and Terrie❤️🙏

My brother Tim and I spent many hours with Maurice when we shinned shoes and swept hair at the hairstyling shop he and Dad co-owned with their brother Jerry at Metcalf South Shopping Center. Maurice was always kind to us, and paid us for a day's work (in addition to what we made shining shoes). We also enjoyed his company on weekends in Pilot Grove. As we got older, Maurice always asked about our families. He was a wonderful uncle to all of us. He loved to kid-around. He was devoted to God and family. He will be missed!
