Joan Kay Wissbaum, 80, passed away on November 6, in Olathe, KS. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. with the Funeral Mass following at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 11, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 21650 W 115th Ter, Olathe, KS. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, KS.

Joan was born in Grand Island, NE in 1942 to Ernest and Mary Wissbaum. She was the youngest of 5 children including three sisters and one brother. After high school Joan entered the convent where she pursued her Bachelors in Religious Studies while also working as a teacher. After much reflection, Joan decided the life of a nun was not her true calling but continued working closely with the church and its many charities.

Joan started a new career with GSA and worked both in Washington DC and Kansas City, MO. Her daughter was born and they settled down in Olathe, KS. Outside of work she loved spending time with her daughter, taking nature walks, reading, painting, decorating and getting together with friends.  Joan was a very active in her church and was a member of the choir and Social Concerns Committee. She was a very loving mother and proud grandmother. She especially enjoyed her time with her grandchildren and would shower them with love and affection.

Joan is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Mary Wissbaum; her siblings Francis Wissbaum, Dorothy Mason, Trudy Schwartz, and Virginia Schafer.

Joan is survived by her daughter Maria DeLeon, son-in-law Marcos DeLeon, grandchildren Julian and Evelyn DeLeon, nieces and nephews Mike Wissbaum, Rose Larsen, Peggy Nadeau, Mary Nadeau, Pat Wissbaum, Rachel Schwartz and her many close friends. She will be missed by many and we will carry her in our hearts forever.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Catholic Charities or Meals on Wheels.

Oh, Maria, I was sorry to read about Joan. We would talk all the way to work and back home when we rode to work. i remember when she was planning your wedding.and what a great job she did. We would discuss all the detalis and it was the most beautiful wedding that we have ever attended. When I retired I missed our commute and conversations so much. The last time I saw Joan was at HYVee and she was getting ready to take a trip with one of her friends. She seemed so happy. She was such a fine lady and one of the best persons I have ever known. I will always remember her.

So sorry to hear about your loss. I didn't know Joan well but we worked off and on periodically at GSA in Kansas City. She was always great to work with and a very nice person. She also had a very subtle and rye sense of humor. A very sweet lady overall.

We are so sorry to hear this. Joan was such a wonderful and kind woman. She always sent a Christmas card every year and always took an interest in what we were doing. It makes me sad to here she is gone, but because of Jesus, we will see her again. May God comfort each of you with blessed memories. Love and prayers, Sandra

Dear Maria, Joan and I entered the Federal service together through the Presidential Management Intern (PMI) program in 1980 and worked together at the General services Administration. We became friends and enjoyed getting together outside of the workplace on weekends for brunch or just to hang out. Joan stood out within our group of 6 PMIs as the most experienced (and the smartest) among us. She always embraced her assignments with enthusiasm and focus. She was a dedicated Mother and was always so proud of you. Whenever we connected over the years, Joan would always share cherished stories of her family. The World is a better place for having Joan with us to bring joy and love. Sending you and yours our deepest sympathy, Jim and Brenna Dean

The world lost a really fine person. I believe she had a very positive impact on the people she met during her life journey. I worked with Joan for many years. She was such a nice person and very good at her job. She mentioned to me once that she sang in her church choir and got lots of joy from that. I wish I had gone to see that. I love seeing people who are happy and enjoying selfless / charitable activities. At work, she stayed focused on the job at hand. She had a gift of seeing through petty interests and getting things done without ruffling too many feathers. I really admired Joan. My sincere condolences.
