Jul 12, 1982---Jul 20, 2022

Kevin Michael Joyce, 40, died in a motorcycle accident on Wednesday evening, July 20, 2022.

Kevin was born in Shawnee, KS on July 12, 1982 to Dennis and Patti Joyce.

Following in his grandfather and father’s footsteps, Kevin devoted his career to being a Union Millwright, and served for 19 years. He was passionate about helping his fellow brothers and sisters advance in the trade and in life.  Throughout his time in the Union, Kevin was an Apprenticeship Instructor, a Delegate to the Regional Council, and became a Business Representative in June 2018.  He’s the true personification of brotherhood.

In 2006, Kevin married Laurel Joyce (Davis) and they welcomed three beautiful daughters soon after.  Of all things Kevin enjoyed and loved the most, at the top of the list would be his girls; Izzy, Emma and Molly.  There’s no doubt if there’s a way to make sure they’re safe from the afterlife, Kevin will find a way.  A fierce and loyal protector in every sense of the word.

Kevin also enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, and camping.  You never knew when he’d decide to go on an outdoor adventure with his daughters, nieces, or nephews.  These memories will be held tight for years to come.  Kevin had a soft spot for animals and loved having every kind of pet or creature by his side -most important being; Bear, Diamond, Thor, and even a cat named Stimpy.

Kevin might have left us early, but he still managed to have a significant effect on so many people around him. He generated countless stories of what it means to be a friend, father, brother, son, cousin, uncle and husband.  Most of these stories will stay between close friends and family, but let’s just say that they are filled with pride, courage, laughter, toughness, sadness, love and heroism.  Stuff that legends are made from, and Kevin was just that – legendary.

Visitation will be 4-7:00 PM on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia Street, Lenexa, KS.  Funeral Service will 10:00 AM, Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 12800 West 75th Street, Shawnee, KS.  Burial to follow at Shanwee Mission Memory Gardens.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to Joyce Family Fund.  A reception will follow the graveside service at the VFW Hall, 9550 Pflumm Road, Lenexa, KS 66215.

Even though I am not a millwright anymore, when Kevin was my instructor, he tought me a great deal what it was to be a millwright. He always had stories that were relatable. Always a smile even when things were down. He was a great man and brother! Rest now, your work is done, your time with us was short, but your memory will live on. Happy to meet, sorry to part, happy to meet again.

Kevin was soooo kind growing up! He was tough, funny, and great to be around. As a matter of fact we just ran into him and he couldn’t stop telling stories to our son about his “strong” daddy and “super athletic” parents. He spoke of his sweet daughters with hearts in his eyes. I’m so sorry Joyce family! Rest easy Kevin, you will be missed!

Kevin was the man in every way shape and form. He taught me so much throughout my apprenticeship. I can remember him telling stories about my family like they were legends just wish he knew that when I told stories of millwrights he was the legend I spoke of. Probably one of the toughest dudes I knew but at the same time I felt I could talk to him about the most delicate subjects and he would give me true from the heart advice. I truly feel he was the backbone of our local. He literally lifted me up after my accident on the 4th and said we don't let our own fall.. shook me to my core that a week after speaking to him he is gone. I will cherish the memories I had with him. The local wont be the same without him. He will forever be missed.

Kevin was such a kind person with a beautiful heart. We were neighbors growing up and I can remember playing Mario Bros. on NES with Kevin, having bottle rocket wars with Kevin and Kyle Billings, and Night Tag at The Joyce’s with Kevin and I teaming up to find Pat and Derek Tate. So many fond memories with his smile and his laugh. God has received an angel.

Kevin was one of a kind! My dad ran a boxing club for 35 years on the other side of town that Kevin as a kid wanted to fight for about 45 min drive one way. Dennis after a working all day as a millwright would load him up and take him to the club after work. At that time Kevin had several medical conditions but that never stopped him. He just kept going. My dad Esteban said if he could just have a team with the heart Kevin had they would be unstoppable. For someone like coach Esteban to talk about you like that you had to be a Special person period! He loved Kevin. As he joined the millwrights I always loved having him on the crew all the customers loved him. I was amazed on how he had a gift with helping and helping people that more and likely never would get the help the push to make it Wright! Keven turned to teaching then as a business agent always working and never afraid to speak up, he had the Mojo for sure. I can’t even remember how many letters of intent to hire he ask he to write for people to get a start. I’m sure he hit a lot of people up for that. Most of all he was a great friend/little brother Family. My family prays for healing to the mom/dad/brother/wife and kids. We was lucky to be friends! Mr. and Mrs.Joyce you did a amazing job teaching him on his way to become who he became as a man. Pete

the apprentice that almost didn’t finish ,Full-Time Traveling Millwright ,Missouri

The news I received through a phone call had me shook up, vomited, & cried like a baby. Locked up in my room, sick at my stomach for a solid day…. And then I could just hear a Kevin Joyce voice in my head say.. “Get out of bed you sissy.” (PG13 version) “Go enjoy life & continue to be successful, kick ass” Kevin helped me through a lot of shit… and it wasn’t all just learning how to be a Millwright. I’ll continue to be devoted on being a reputable Millwright and a good person with a heart of gold. That he had. He will be missed, & his friends & family will be in my heart!

As i sit hear struggling with the words I want to say about Kevin and coming to terms with this tragic loss, I'm reminded of the times we worked together. Kevin never gave me a hard time about being a carpenter on a millwright job, as that sometimes happens in the trades, always treating me with respect...Kevin was a craftsman at his trade and was a true brother in the field. When Kevin was an instructor, he along side another teacher, stayed late so i could finish my welding certification. He didn't have to, but he knew it would benefit me and my families income because that's the kind of man he was, family first...My love goes out to all of the Joyce family along with the brothers and sisters of local 1329. My friend and brother you will be missed and I will say your name out loud often...KEVIN JOYCE.

Sarah & I were so sad to hear of Kevin’s passing. Condolences to Patty, Dennis, and the entire family. As I thought about the various times I spent with Kevin when we were young, it’s funny, everything and everyone else just sort of fades to the background. Kevin stands out because his personality and actions were so strong. And I mean that in the best possible way. Everything he did and said cut through…it left an impression. He didn’t do anything half-way. We were all blessed to have known him, regardless of when in time or how long. Being a dad I can’t imagine the void he will leave in his wife and girls’ life, but I know that each of those memories they had with Kevin will stand out, and make them better for having experienced them.

Family Friend, our daughters played basketball together ,Lenexa ,Kansas

My daughter Briana played basketball and been friends with daughter Izzy for many years. I had the pleasure of getting to know all the Joyce family during that time going to weekly practices, games, traveling tournaments, cheering on our kids from the sidelines. Kevin was always so friendly and pleasant to chat with. Loving and supportive father to his beautiful girls. It breaks my heart how much I am certain his girls will miss having their Dad there for them physically. I also believe he will always be watching over them. The Joyce family have always been great people to know and supportive to me and my daughters when my family went through some tough times. Sending my condolences, prayers, and hugs.

I’ve known Kevin practically my whole life. Growing up, as my dads a millwright and a great friend of Kevin’s. I really got a feel for what it meant to be apart of 1529. Something I never had experienced anywhere in life. That we aren’t just any local, but a real brother and sisterhood. Ones that have your back no matter the challenges or mistakes you get thrown at in life. Kevin knew exactly what 1529 represented. A family. These are things we tend to fall short of and neglect now days, but if there’s one thing to know. Is that Kevin was not one of these people to fall short of. His family was everything whether you where blood or not. I know I wouldn’t of made it to where I’m at today. If it wasn’t for him. He was much more then just a millwright, teacher and business agent, but a friend and life mentor. Someone that You could call any hour of the day or night and speak your mind too. Even if it’s been months or years since you last spoke it would feel as if not a day has passed. I’m great full for the time I was able to have with Kevin and more then blessed to be apart of something he worked endless hours to build. For that I thank you for your service and dedication. Rest In Peace Kevin. You will be missed.

I retired a couple of months after he became a business representative. The last time i saw him @ the unionhall, this young man had grown from a wide eyed apprentice into a newly appointed business representative. I got to tell him how proud I was of him.and teased him about the gray hair the stress of his new job was already glistening in the light. I will forever miss you and will always think of you around St.Patricks Day,Brother! I'm unable to attend the services but my thoughts are with your family through this most difficult time.
